Which Fragrances are prone to seizing?

Good day,
I am quite new to CP soap making and seem to learn something new each time I make a new recipe. However, my tried and trusted recipe seized on me after I added 'Oatmeal, Milk and Honey' fragrance oil. What a scramble!!! The soap looks great, a ginger colour, almost translucent - nothing like all the other batches made with the same recipe which are all white.

I intend working with 'Bubblegum Orange, Lemon Grass and Ylang-Ylang', can anyone tell me whether these fragrances are also prone to seizing unexpectedly? How can I prevent this happening?
I would appreciate some expert advise.

florals are notorious for seizing.

but in general you need to look at specific fragrances from specific suppliers - for example I've never had OMH from Scent Works seize.

i find the best thing is to check your fragrances out , lots of suppliers have reviews on the sites ..Add the FO to your melted oils before you add the lye . Have everything you need , ready to go , any colors, mold lined etc , you need to be able to move as fast as the FO does , if it gives you trouble. In the end you can do everything humanely possible and it will seize or rice . It will still be soap , just won't look as you envisioned it .

If your fo has vanilla in it , you can anticipate it turning brown as it cures. There vanilla stabilizers out there , to help prevent this from happening.

I put my fo's in the oils BEFORE the lye water is added! I got this tip from quite a few seasoned soapers on this forum. I have no problems at all with my fo's now. Hope this helps.

Hello Carol-Ann, welcome to the forum!

Of the 3 fragrances you intend to soap with, I have only used Lemongrass so far and I had successful batches with it. No seizing or ricing and the scent is one of my favorite. I know there are certain fragrances that are know to cause trace acceleration, seizing and/or ricing but some of the factors can be more relative to the supplier. For instance, maybe a certain FO from one supplier is know to cause problems but a similar fragrance from a different supplier may perform beautifully in CP soaping. Go figure!

Forums can be a very helpful place for gaining information and by researching the FO's listed on any given supplier's website is really worth the time and effort you spend in doing so. Just continue to ask questions and check out different soaping forums. Good luck!

beware of Daystar's descriptions of how an FO behaves - I've found them less than accurate in a number of instances.

When The Scent Review Board is back up you will get your best information there, I think.

Fragrance and seizing

Thank you all you wonderful people.
The best bit of advice is to add the fragrance to the oils before you add the lye - 2 replies mentioned that, so I will give it a try.
I love a lot of fragrance in my soaps but because of the bad incident with OMH, I am so afraid it will happen again.

I am from South Africa, so do not use the same suppliers that you have access to. But, all my colours I order from overseas i.e. New Zealand and BrambleBerry in the U.S.A. Here in South Africa they do mostly Melt and Pour.

Even if you add the FO to the oils, it can still rice or thicken. This just happened to me with a new FO that I tried. But another poster gave another tip - keep some simmering hot water handy and add just a bit to the soap if it's thickening too quickly.
