Hello All,

I've asked for some soap supplies to get started in the hobby/craft this Christmas. I'm going to be doing my first batches using the basic recipe found in THE SOAPMAKERS COMPANION.

I'm just having a tough time finding Olive Oil for the first recipe as noted in the book. I don't see it at Brambleberry which is where I'm asking for most of my supplies to come from.

Does anyone have any insight as to where else to look so I can buy an adequate amount but not 35 pounds?

Thanks,

Brad

first off, many use olive oil from the grocery store - Bertolli seems to be a pretty reliable brand. Don't use super cheap stuff, tho, as much of it is adulterated or labeled in such a way that you cannot tell it's mostly soy or something.

but if you do want to buy it online you can get it by the gallon (~7#) from Columbus Foods/Soapers Choice http://www.soaperschoice.com/cgi-soaper ... d=$cart_id

Do you have access to Australian Olive Oils in your supermarkets for a reasonable price? Our oils undergo rigorous testing and are pure and unadulterated.

Brad,

Soaper's Choice is a great place to order online, but before you do, check in your area for a Chinese grocery store, an Indian store, or any other ethnic based store.

I have been pleasantly surprised to be able to find a gallon of pomace olive oil for about $14 (I used that to experiment when I was first starting before buying the more expensive oil for my retail products).

When I found an Indian food store I was able to find high quality Olive and Sunflower oil at a very low price compared to the grocery stores. My grocery store sells good quality Olive for about $30 and I was able to find it at half that price by looking for the mom and pop ethnic grocers.

Thanks for the replies everyone...really appreciated.

I'll definitely take a look locally and see what I can find.

yes, dont pay shipping for what oils you can buy locally. i get a big jug for 17-19, i get coconut at superwalmart for 5$, its the only place i can find that. Castor is cheaper online(than health store), which is a must for bubbles(for me anyways). good luck. Where did you buy your fragrance? there are many good fo places. dont use fragrance from michaels, its for melt and pour. I DO use color from there, it does work for hp and cp. just doesnt make real dark colors, the red turns hot pink, green ok, blue ok, orange turns peach.

I'm buying some of my initial stuff at Brambleberry to get started. In time, with the help of those here, I hope to find the best place to buy different things!

Thanks-

Brad

brambleberry spendy, may i suggest other places? oils- oils by nature, soaperschoice, wsp(wholesalesupplies)
fos- peakcandle(my fav) you get 10 -1ozers for 20$ you can order as many of each as you want, some places only let you order one of each scent. natures garden, also has 10 pack deal, bittercreekcandle(has bundle deal, i think) when i first started i used bramble, they have good fos, just if you want to save a buck? bertsheavenscent also good.

Seriously? Bertolli?
It's marketed as a reliable brand (happened to be by a family member); but I've seen serious test where either:
-the PH was far from the right PH; which basically means you're being ripped off and the extra vergin olive oil is in reality normal olive oil. Nothing wrong with that (for soaping and when it's being heated) but you shouldn't have to pay for EVOO.
-It was rancid.

Bertolli isn't reliable either? Drat.

Well I actually order mine from Columbus Foods/Soapers's Choice and I know Mike tests every shipment he gets so I trust it. Because my kids have serious allergies to nuts and to PEANUTS, and because peanut oil is one of those used to adulterate olive I won't trust any grocery store brand if I'm serving it.

And yes, I eat my soaping oils. I do. YUM. Coconut, safflower, olive, lard (yep, lard) and even palm oil have found their way into our diets.

Did I mention that you can buy most oils at Columbus Foods/Soapers Choice by the gallon? You needn't buy 35#. Tho sooner or later you will... trust me you will!
