I don't sell my soap, but I have about 110 bars of soap in my house right now, so I am starting to think that I should. I checked with my homeowners insurance agent, and he quoted me $350 a year, and you can pay it month to month. I am considering a start at the local farmer's market this summer. So check with your agent. The $239.00 listed in this thread sounds like the cheapest, but I kind of like going with someone I know in case something did come up.

I'll get RLI in the near future, as I will probably start selling soon (biting nails, biting nails). I've never heard anything bad about them, and even though they're not a company I'm personally familiar with, I feel a lot better knowing that my homeowner's insurance company (USAA) uses them to underwrite policies of this nature. I will purchase my RLI policy through USAA for an added level of security, so that if I ever have to file a claim that RLI doesn't want to pay, I have USAA to advocate for me. I think they're the best way to go for most people who are just starting to sell.

Mel, what state do you live in? I'm eligible to get USAA insurance and was going to check with them about this kind of insurance. I've had quotes for them for homeowner's and car insurance and liked their competitive rates. For some reason though, after talking to one insurance person they said certain insurance is dependent on the laws in the state you reside in and what coverage you get. Thanks!

I'm in Louisiana. You should give them a call and double check. I've been very, very pleased with every dealing we've had through USAA, so I feel certain they wouldn't use RLI as an underwriter if they'd ever had problems with filing claims. As soon as my local people heard I was doing my first show in August, they started clamoring for me to sell now, and I'm considering it. I'll likely buy the policy in the next week or so, just to be safe.
