What weird things have you put in soap?

Haha! Bodhi.

I've put blood, sweat, and tears in my own batch. . . not my own, mind you. Teehee. : )

I haven't done anything too crazy. I think I've hit a lot of the usual suspects: coffee, milk, beer, carrots, pumpkin purree, tea, strawberries, blueberries.... I think that's it. I really want to try cucumber too and maybe a banana soap--- that sounds awesome!

To you the usual suspects. Until I found this thread, I didn't know vegetables and fruits could be put in soap.

where did you hear that?
Hi bodhi;

Here is list of some of the info on pines. From what I can tell, not all pines are hazardous. However, caution should be exercised. The last site is of interest because it deals not with the pinecones, but with their properties and their ability to absorb cadmium. I live in western Pennsylvania and the locals insist you should not barbecue with pinecones. I find that most local norms are based on a grain of truth. If you are able to find more info on the subject keep us informed. I would love to be able to use pinecones on my soaps, but don't want to go through the process of making them safe.

Interesting. I wouldnt put too much stock in the first two. Juniper and pines are often eaten and all of them are used medicinally. That being said i dont know many people who go about their yards eating their yew shrubs.

The study refers only to ground pine and is interesting so i guess people shouldnt eat/burn/use those cones, but it isnt referring to all pine cones.

Might the locals insist on not using pine cones to barbecue because they can pop and send sparks flying?

No, they insist you will get sick. Me, I personally don't care. Not being able to tell one tree from the other and not knowing who is right i will pass on pinecones. There is too much confusing data on this and too many types of cones involved.

While picking up pinecones in my backyard, I decided I should put them to use. I ground them up into a fine powder and made a batch of soap. The soap came out pretty good, but after doing some research I found out they are cytotoxic and carcinogenic in the dust form. To bad, it was a nice batch.

Just like colourants or other powdered additives aren't that good to inhale.
I'd worry more about the grinding than the soap though.

Glad I started this thread. Now I'm wondering about the benefits of adding banana to soap and how much you add and if I could use my daughter's baby food (it's organic, so it's just pureed bananas).

I used 2 whole bananas in a batch that was 50-56oz. They did loose a bit of their volume with the two times through the strainer though.

Yup the beer and banana frozen slushie is by far my weirdest. I also have done a half and half with coffee and sugar bar that overheated and I ended up rebatching it...so far its very nice! This summer when I can tomato sauce I plan on saving some of the juice I squeeze from the tomatoes before I cook them and using that liquid instead of water. I used a lot of snow this winter as well-free soft water!

The carrots I used were from my daughter's baby food stash too-- ;) You're giving me an idea of where to get my banana puree! I was not looking forward to the mashing and straining. Too bad they don't make cucumber baby food purree!

Snow soap? What a great idea! Let us know how the tomato juice soap turns out too please?

I love the idea of using snow and tomato. Pumpkin sounds exciting. I have read that you can use grape leaves for natural coloring and it turns into a yellow.

I have a feeling I may be moving to CP faster then I thought....

I am very curious about the soap with banana and cream (sounds good enough to eat :) I know that bananas have a lot of great properties, so I'm wondering if these properties would be kept in the soap. May I ask: did you use banana scent as well? I've never been crazy about banana scented stuff, because it's usually horribly chemical, but I'm intrigued by this one. Thanks for sharing, I see a banana soap coming up :)
