Just got off the phone with my friend, E. Recently she visited wanting to pick my brain about how to make soap. And then completely outta the blue she texts me a photo of her soap!!! ?? Oh, Grasshopper, this requires a conversation, not a photo! So I called her right away. She did mostly lard and it was hard and crumbly but I think she's hooked.

She has to start somewhere, it's good she had a go, as you said she's hooked, reel her in :p.

I made a little cookie stamp on my 3D printer and made these gingerbread soaps. I filled the lines with white soap (painted in with a paintbrush). Still working out how to make the lines tidy as the cookie stamp has a flat edge which sort of pushes the soap out rather than making a crisp line, but I like them.
I bought the STL file. I remember ages ago @glendam discussed how to make a sharp edge for a stamp on a 3D printer - need to find that thread!

I cried over my ugly soap today. I used my wild turmeric infused olive oil and some PKO. I wish I'd read @AliOop's advice about warming the oils well because my soap is so mottled. 😖 Urgh! I didn't take into account the early winter cold here.

But on a happier note, my friend, who has helped test my soaps, messaged me to say that she loves them and asked for more. Yayy-ness! She said she will take even the uglies haha. Apparently, she'd just watched a documentary about toxicology and wants to run for the hills screaming.

Awww, we all understand the disappointment of soap not turning out as planned. But I bet if we saw pictures, and didn't know it wasn't planned, we'd be ooo'ing and aaahhh'ing over your pretty soap. 🤗

Have you tried using the stamp with mica, maybe Winter White, @Vicki C? I more or less make a mica stamp pad with a makeup sponge set on top of an upturned yogurt lid. I saturate the pad with alcohol and mica, scrape the excess to the side, then “ink” my soap stamp. This is how I stamp my Dragon’s Blood soap. On my way to an event, but can send pics tonight if anyone is interested.

I did think of that - for this soap I like the look of the white soap filling because it makes me think of frosting…

I’m dithering over my oil blend and probably overthinking it. I want to try a low-coconut oil bar, and I don’t have any palm oil so I’m somewhat lost. Currently I have:

Olive - 30%
Shea butter - 20%
Coconut -15%
Castor - 5%

I’m missing 30%. Worried that if I use 30% grape seed it will be too soft (and many threads comment about the rancidity worry). I have sweet almond, almond kernel, meadow foam, and grapeseed oil as options.

Edit: I think I will stop overthinking my oil choice if I make a mini loaf so I’m just going to do that 😅

Bump up that shea to 40%, or even 45%, and put the remainder into sweet almond. Save the meadowfoam seed oil for a nice lotion!
