Just wondering what everyone's process is for developing a new soap. Do you start with a specific fragrance and work from there, or do you have a certain color/texture you want to reproduce, or do you start with the soap qualities (hardness, lather, etc)?

each way is possible.. they're all pieces of one puzzle, so from ever part you start, you'll have to think about other things, too..

another way to approach this is to ask yourself "what do i want this soap do?" gentle, moisturizing, strong smell, no smell, bubbly, creamy, very hard or medium..

also, who am i making this soap for? woman, man, baby, teen, elderly...

or, you just have an idea - it's going to be blue and pink! and you just go from there ;)

So far I work from what I have on hand. It is working for me at this time. I have done some well how about mild with no scent with spefic people in mind. Mom best friend can't handle scents her mom due to age delicate skin so castille with them in mind as well as my Grandpa. I think you should do however works for you.

I'm always trying new ingredients... and I just plot and plan until I have some ideas of things I want to combine. For example I once bought an FO named "Avocado Mint"... so I was inspired to buy some avocado oil and dry some mint from my garden to develop the recipe. The rest I did on soapcalc.

Sometimes I want to try a new oil so I just decide what FO or additives might go well with it.

The longest part of my process happens in my mind.
