The DH and my mother went to a Home and Garden Show today and there are a couple of booths with soap and lotion vendors. The first one we stopped at had signs saying their products would help treat eczema, dry skin, yadda yadda yadda. The is where my first eye-roll happened. Then the lady was coming around claiming that her lotion that has beeswax in it saved her $400 because it caused the cancer cells she had on her nose to disappear. Ummm...

Then the other booth the lady wasn't making claims but looking at the bars I could tell they were HP (though still nice looking) so I asked her and she said that yes and it is a proprietary process that only they do. Once she realized that I also make soaps, she had no interest talking to me about her soaps.

So, what do you think, am I blowing this experience out of proportion?

Well the 1st one needs a slapping. Maybe her nose should be rubbed in some regulations about therapeutic claims and we'd see what would disappear then.

The 2nd one, meh. Wonder what she does. Mixes the soap only on full moons while wearing hemp bloomers and standing facing the pyramid of Giza? I guess she might have some legit special something going on  and you identified yourself as competition. Curious. Only so many ways to make soap isn't there?

The first lady sounds like a kook and her medical claims are against the law. I would never do business with someone who is so dishonest.
The second lady just sounds like a bad sales women, at least she was honest even if a little stand offish. Its possible she does HP in some weird way and thinks making that claim makes her soap special.

I've also had soap makers stop talking to me when they find out I make soap, its like they instantly see a competitor. One gal had soaps that clearly looked HP but she said were CP. I was really curious how she got the rustic, unusual swirls in CP but she didn't like being quizzed. I suppose once I start selling, I won't want to share my tips or special techniques either.

Yeah, after we walked away from the first table I looked at the DH and told him that all if that was against the law and explained to him why I don't make medical claims. I laughed off the second lady but thought had she been a bit nicer I might have bought a bar because there were some I really liked the scent of.

Oh, there was another booth that was selling an aloe vera lotion (which had a long list of ingredients on the jar). It was a nice lotion and my mom bought some (not the cheapest) only because it didn't leave a greasy film on her hands and she needs that at work and I haven't mastered a non-greasy formula left. A lot of claims as well on this one: http://www.aloecream.biz/ingredients/

I agree that the lady should not have made medical claims, but with my experience soaps can help such issues. I make soaps and oils with essential oils for my brothers psoriasis and my dads rosatia (Spelling?), and really dry skin for a lot of people. And yes, they work :D. But, you are right in that unfortunately medical claims cannot be made, and the second lady was most definitely rude. Can you imagine if everyone were like that? i sure wouldn't have learned a thing without helpful soapers.

I certainly don't doubt that the correctly made soap or lotion can have an effect somehow but the fact that she blatantly told people that she had cancer cells on her nose, and I believe she said that she started using her own stuff and a week later when she went to the dermatologist they were no longer cancerous is down right illegal. First off, if it did do that then wouldn't a company buy you out so they can have whatever special thing in your lotion is instead of you selling at a show in Cleveland. Also, what if she tells someone that who has melanoma and they try that instead of being treated and it gets worse, why would you risk a possible lawsuit just to sell your products? Seriously just blows my mind that the world is to then point where you have to say things like that to get someone to buy your product.

that 2nd lady was just being bloody damn rude! good for her! what if she realized that she lost a potential sale coz of that? some ppl are so stupid it's not curable.

i've no comment about the 1st lady. refer to this: some ppl are so stupid it's not curable.

I would have gone absolutely ballistic on Person 1. How DARE she even imply that beeswax lotion can cure cancer?!?!?! And nevermind the risk of a lawsuit, I have no idea how anyone with a conscience could sleep at night after swindling someone for a couple of bucks in a way that will only bring them harm. There is a special place in Hell for people like that.

The second woman was rude and stupid, she doesn't have a secret process and knows that any other soaper knows that is BS.

Okay, rant over. Back to your regularly scheduled thread...
