Hey guys I am in need of a little help. Last night I made a batch of soap, and I melted the oils together, mixed the lye and water together, everything was going fine. After I poured the Lye Water, I noticed the lye water mixing cup had crystallized lye stuck on the bottom. It was as hard as ice, and was all stuck on the bottom which meant that very little lye went into the oil mixture.
I picked apart the hardened lye and measured it and then because I realized the mixture was ruined anyways, I just poured in the amount of lye that was hardened. I mixed it all together, and it looked normal, it just wasn't thickening up(I'm doing it hot process by the way). Every time I stopped mixing it would get very spotty and I noticed it was all the lye that was just floating around, as it wouldn't dissolve.
I kept on mixing but nothing was happening, so I just poured it into a random box in my house, and left it over night. I came down this morning and it looked like this:

I'm thinking that the oil is on top, and all the lye particles are on the bottom. What I am wondering, is what should I do with this? Is it safe to us? Should I wait a little while?

Thanks :)

did you mix your lye well with the water? if you let the lye sit in the cup with the water you have to stir til well disolved, i would toss it, sorry.

How old was your lye? Sometimes if it is exposed to air, it will react with the CO2 to form sodium carbonate which is much less soluble in water than lye.

I got the same hard layer of lye in the last batch of soap I made. What happened was I didn't mix my lye water enough and the lye settled to the bottom and formed a hard sheet! I couldn't even break it up. So I measured out new lye water and mixed thoroughly and it was just normal!

I wouldn't use the soap the way it is, it could be harmful to your skin. I would rebatch like everyone is saying, to be safe.

if you added undissolved lye crystals into your oils/lye solution mixture you can just go ahead and toss the soap now. the lye won't completely dissolve and you end up with bits of it. rebatching won't get rid of them. based on my experience cuz I've made every "mistake" on the planet (or will).
