Wet Soap Wednesday: Sideways Cylinder

I'm sure I'm not the first one to think of this.

I love the type of swirls I can get in a loaf mold, but I like a round bar of soap. I'm never really happy with my swirls when I use a cylinder mold (Pringles can, most often). I had the thought: what if I could put the cylinder on it's side and pour into it that way and also swirl it, like in my loaf. I cut an opening down one side of the Pringles can (I also shortened it to make a smaller batch) and secured the lid with hot glue. I used tie straps to make the shape more stable and also provide feet. And so, I give you the Cylinder Loaf Mold. If it really works, I may have to somehow make a reusable version.

I use a short piece of pvc pipe for my round soap. I bought a short piece and end caps for around $3.50. works real well and the soap just slips out of it and if doesn't I throw it in the freezer for a bit and then it comes out

That sort of limits the kind of swirls you can make, because of the depth of those pipes so the poster came up with this to be able to use some techniques originally meant for square loaves.

I was thinking the pipe could be cut with a saw the way the bread tube was that she used and laid on the side too

Ah yes, you're right.. You've probably given artemis an idea for her reusable mold

But for testing, I think this one rocks hehe

i was very inspired by some of these videos, maybe someday but not today HAHA

i keep mine pretty simple. i use the pvc pipe with end caps (i have been lining it with the flexible cutting boards from the dollar store so it slides out afterwards, considering trying oiling the inside of the pvc next time) and just do a sloppy drop swirlish thing in them as i go lolView attachment 35162View attachment 35163

have you tried not using anything in it? I don't grease mine and it just slips out the only one I had issues with was a rebatch one that I added way to much water to

yes, it was awful!
i stuck it in the freezer , we were able to force it out after a bit but it was such a battle lol
i should go back and check those batch notes, see if there was anything in particular that would have made it harder to come out

I had to force the rebatch one but once it started coming out it kept coming. the others I did I just tipped upside down and the weight moved them out--I think ya gotta be careful not to dribble on the sides though. I did that with my rebatch and I kinda think that it is enough to bind it up

This was my first thought when I saw the pringles can. A dremel would make qiuck work of putting a small slice down a piece of PVC pipe.

I had to force the rebatch one but once it started coming out it kept coming. the others I did I just tipped upside down and the weight moved them out--I think ya gotta be careful not to dribble on the sides though. I did that with my rebatch and I kinda think that it is enough to bind it up

oh I should add that I moved the whole thing around in my hands while kinda squeezing it to get it to release from the sides too--you could see it come away from the side slightly

24 hours later, it's still a little too soft to unmold. I've hidden it from myself so I will stop poking it and will check again tomorrow.

Stick it in the freezer for 15 mins. That will do the trick!

They soap needs to be set nice and hard to come out easily. You just need to give the end a good whack on some concrete and that will jar it loose.

Patience, Iago. It's not stuck, it's just too soft. I can stick my finger into it. This one's just setting up a little slower.

Today it was hard enough to come out of the mold. The bars are a little misshapen due to the opening in the cylinder, we'll see if I can correct that after they harden more. The swirl is not the greatest, but I think it proved the concept. I layered white/orange/white and did a chopstick swirl. Normally, when I do a swirl in a cylinder, I end up with some bars having a lot more of the colored batter and some having almost none. I think these came out with a more even proportion. The verdict: I will try this again. I may even be picking up some PVC for a more permanent model. For now, though, I still have Pringles cans in reserve to use up.
