I hadn't known about washing soda. I've used borax and Oxyclean for laundry and I've used baking soda in a hair rinse which takes away buildup.

A good way to test if it has fully transitioned into Washing Soda is to add it to some lemon juice. If it fizzes up put it back in the oven

Thank you so much Paintguru and CaliChan for sharing this information. I just happen to have a 50 lb bucket of baking soda that I will not use in 10 years (long story). We buy washing soda all the time as part of the laundry process, DH will love to hear that baking soda can be converted in an oven to washing soda.

Calcium bicarbonate -> Calcium carbonate

Borax is mined actually (they used to use 20 mule teams) and it is sodium hexaborate. We also use it in the wash.

What is your experience with 100% lard soap? I had read some about that and was planning on making some for laundry.

I do this for my youngest son's cloth diapers (he's allergic to coconut and the enzymes in commercial laundry detergent). I make a 2lb batch of lard soap (0% superfat), grate it, then add 2 gallons water, 1/4 cup washing soda and 1/4 cup borax. 1/4 cup per load in my HE machine. No build up issues at all and cleans great.

Maythorn - if you are buying Oxyclean you might want to try a homemade version. I found it here,

and have been using it for a few months. It really works for me, hope it does for you. I have stopped buying laundry products except some pretreatments, but I continually look for something I can make and stop buying any store laundry product.

As one KS girl to another, thank you!:wink: I would love to try that. Looks fun and I'm almost out of Oxyclean.
