Looking for help on how to get vanilla extract, flavour etc. to hold in Cold Process soap making. :-?
Cheers,

Vanilla Extract will not work in CP because of the alcohol content. It will cause your soap to seize, and the scent will not hold. You could use any of the myriad Vanilla Fragrance Oils or try Vanilla Absolute, which will probably prove cost prohibitive. Peru Balsam has a similar quality to Vanilla - not the same, but similar.

Like vanilla extract that you buy in the grocery store? If so, I wouldn't use that because of the alcohol content.
Or are you using vanilla oleoresin or vanilla planifolia, something like that?

Personally I have never had success with vanilla oleoresin sticking. If I want a vanilla-type scent & it has to be eo, I go with Peru Balsam.

Genny, I swear we must be related or something. Great minds think (and obviously type) alike!

Thank you everyone who answered my question. I’ve triedeverything mentioned from Peru Balsam to Tonka Bean, obviously without anyjoy.

Would you be able to use vanilla extract from the store if you boiled the alcohol out of it first?? Microwave style. Hmm...

..okay, it was a bad idea..It turned into pasty syrup and smelled burnt. So I diluted it with water and... was just bad. :(

Why dont you use Vanilla Essential Oil?
I was really close to buying it yesterday when i went to the health foods store, but ended up getting Eucalyptus instead.

What you'll usually find at health food stores is diluted. A lot. There is usually around 5% actual vanilla in those and the rest is jojoba or other carrier oil, so it won't leave very much scent in a soap.

So may I suggest:

For a variety of reasons, I need to avoid any synthetic fragrances, but I would like to a hint of vanilla to various recipes. Is there any reason that I couldn't take vanilla beans and instead of putting it into a bottle of vodka (like I do to make extract) put them into a bottle of oil and either hot process or let it steep for a while?

Natures Garden sells Vanilla Powder...I found the same thing at a local Amish run bulk store. Have started experimenting with it in CP and HP. So far so good. Doesn't discolor and the smell is wonderful.

I bought an orange vanilla bar once, that stated only sweet orange E/O in the ingredients but it had vanilla bean flecks in it. The vanilla scent lasted all through the bar until the end. There was a supplier that was selling crushed vanilla bean, but I can't remember who it was. That might work though, if it's okay that you have a texture in the bar.

Is that the only place selling the powder? Is the powder edible? I am thinking if the vanilla powder that we use for baking can be use in the same context.
