Oh dear - I forgot two of my oils :-(

My usual recipe of 1000g oils calls for 139g lye, with a 3% superfat.
Today, I used only 900g oils, but with the same amount of lye. If I recalculate the amount of lye I would need for 900g of oils with 0% superfat, it says 130g. So I used 9g extra of lye than is safe.

The oils I forgot were Avocado and Castor (50g each).

Can someone help me to figure out if this is going to be OK? I used 190g water (filtered coffee) in the recipe and 150g Coconut cream.

I have never calculated for the additional fat in the coconut cream in my recipe, I just use a 3% superfat and figure that the additional fat in the cream will probably push that superfat amount up a bit. I do use less water though, to compensate for the water in the cream.

The can says the cream contains 82% coconut solids, and per 100ml it contains 21.3g total fat, of which 15.5g is saturated. So if I used 150g that's almost 32g additional fat that was not included in my recipe calculation. However, I omitted a total of 100g fat. If I put 32g of CO into Soap Calc, it says I need 5.86g of NaOH to saponify it. So actually I have only used 3.14g more than I should for a 0% superfat.

My lye is 98% NaOH.

Do you think it will be OK with a long cure?

Thank you for taking the time to help me with this. :)

Based on this info and eyeballing your other numbers, I think your soap will be fine after it cures. Let the bars cure for a month and then test.

My guess is the surface of the bars will be zap free fairly quickly, but I'd go a step further with this batch when it's cured by splitting a bar and zap testing the center to be absolutely sure.

I really do think it'll be okay, but it never hurts to be extra careful in "iffy" situations like this.

The gods must have been smiling on me - I can't fathom how this has happened. Maybe my lye was only 97% or something?

That's entirely possible, especially if you've had it for awhile. It doesn't take much exposure to the open air to drop the purity a few percent, even if the NaOH looks fine -- free flowing, no clumps. Or it could be one or more of your fats could have real sap values that are a bit higher than the sap values Soapcalc is using. Hard to say.
