I found a recipe that I'd like to try for Brown Sugar Oatmeal soap. Here's the particulars...
Crisco- 21.5 oz
Olive Oil- 21.4 oz
Coconut Oil- 19.2 oz
Castor Oil- 1.9 oz

Lye- 9.1 oz
Water- 24.3

2/3 c ground oats
1 c brown sugar

I found it in a CPHP article. It says to stir the oats in well after it's cooked, then just barely stir in the brown sugar...it's supposed to leave swirls when unmolded.

It just seems like a lot of water...I ran it through soapcalc, at 5% SF, and this is how it came out.

If you left the setting as the default on soap calc, that'll be fine for hp (doesn't matter about the cp part, hp is fine!)

As for sugar, that would end up leaving raw sugar in the soap - personally I wouldn't be keen on that but people use sugar scrubs all the time and love it.

Be careful with oats as they can be really scrubby. Baby oats are well liked, or go easy with how much you put in if using normal oats

Thanks for the reply! I have a customer that has been asking for a soap with sugar and oatmeal, so I thought I'd try this. The recipe suggested grinding quick oats to a powder, but I don't think I will use the full amount suggested. Thanks again

Even if you don't use the full amount of oats, I would either grind to a powder(or use baby oatmeal without the banana), or make oat milk and use that instead of water. Oats can get really scratchy.

Oh, and that is WAY too much sugar. You are going to have a volcano. That is also 30% CO at 5% SF. Is that what you want?

Thanks Susie! I put some quick oats in my food processor, and ground them to powder. Thanks for the warning about the brown sugar... From the way the recipe sounded, since I'd only be folding it in at the end, I wouldn't get the volcano...good to know, cuz it would most certainly happen to me...lol

And about the coconut, yes 30%. It isn't my favorite, but that's what sells around here. I've had lots of people ask for a pure coconut oil bar.

I have gotten a volcano from 2 Tablespoons/PPO. There is just no way you are going to even get that much brown sugar near soap batter and not get a volcano. Also, if you do leave that much brown sugar not fully incorporated in soap batter, it is going to cause problems with cutting. Then when the customer uses it, it will be scratchy.

I have to agree with Craig here. If you are selling soap, this should have been something you already have experience with. I have, even though I don't sell, used oats in soap batter, each different kind of sugar, fruit purees, carrot purees, coffee in ground and liquid forms, and almost every other kind of additive mentioned on this forum with the exception of beer and wine. It is something I thought I had better at least have a nodding acquaintance with every ingredient that any family member could ask for.(It would just never occur to them to ask for wine or beer soap.)
