Hi all. Well i was reading the soapmakers companion and running some of her recipes thru mms lye calculator. I than was playing w/ the calculator just for fun. So I believe to feed my soap addiction I am gonna need to start expanding my oil and butter supply. Right now I have 6 oils and butters. My local grocery store has some oils but they are pricey. Due to being only store within 20 min drive they are pricey on most stuff. So what oils other than O.O C.O Castor Tallow Cocoa butter and Crisco do ya'll suggest I start with? Thanks for any input. :?

From the supermarket? Sunflower's nice in sm amts (>10%) cheap & easy to source.Avocado's lovely but its a little more pricey. And ricebran. :)

Let me clarify sorry. I don't care so much about where it is more what oils or butters you like to use. I am not opposed to online shopping. What do you all think of say walnut oil?

Oddly enough, I JUST got done reading reviews online about The Soapmaker's Companion because.....I borrowed it from the library and now I can't renew it anymore. I found there were quite a few reviews on the negative side about the book. I think it has a lot of useful information, but I don't take EVERYTHING she says to heart....

Anyway...I second the RBO....Sweet Almond....and I love the Cocoa Butter. (My brother gave me 5lbs. for christmas!)

I think the oils/butters you already have are MORE than enough to get started with, though....

I love my lard and sheep tallow soaps, and you can render it yourself and save some money there.

Olive is always first on my list, but for oils to add I like avocado, high oleic sunflower, lard & hempseeed. I try to use oils & butters that all have at least a one year shelf-life. Walnut has a very short shelf-life, so I've never tried it.

my fav soap is oo, co, po, castor, shea or cocoa. I dont use crisco, tallow, or canola.

I use palm oil and shea butter regularly. Mango butter is also nice, and jojoba oil.

I couldn't live without palm kernel oil, I use equal amounts of pko and coconut in most recipes and love the fact that it helps with the lather without drying my skin like coconut does. I also love avocado.
