I've read that too much TD can be irritating to skin. How much is too much? Also, what's your favorite method for premixing TD and why?

TIA for replies

The amount you use will depend on how white/light you are trying to get your soap. I use the oil dispersable as I find it works best for me. Some prefer water dispersable. I pre-mix my TD in a squirt bottle with a lid. I run it through my coffee grinder just to make it as fine as possible and then add it to either olive oil or glycerine and shake it up. Then I let it sit for a few days and use it as needed. I dont' really measure how much I put it. I just add it until I achieve what I'm going for. I've not had any irritation from it. But I also don't use a crazy amount in a batch either.

I have no idea on whether TD is irritating to the skin.

But, some formulations are water soluble and some should be mixed with oil. Your supplier should indicate this.

Oh I realize there are oil and water soluble versions! I should have been more clear. I'm sorry. What I was wondering is do you prefer to premix small amounts for each batch, or large amounts in a bottle? If bottle, do you add something to agitate the mix while shaking? If yes, then what? I've seen people use ball bearings, bbs, and even a toy car! :)

Thank you for the reply! I got mine from BB and it's oil & water soluble ...but I also bought some water soluble from WSP just to see if I like it better. Haven't tried it yet tho. I've been mixing for each batch, but I'd like to use a bottle for efficiency! :)

I'm one of those that mixes small amounts for each batch. I started out doing it that way from the beginning of my soapy endeavors and I have it down to such a 'science' now that it would throw off my entire system if I were ever to go the bottle route. Just thinking about converting over to the bottle system horrifies me. lol

IrishLass :)

I really just make it on the fly in a small squirt bottle..I get mine from SoapGoods, and I mix with water..seems to work better for me than mixing in oil, even tho its water/oil soluble. I don't really measure it either...but I make sure its pretty thin. Never heard it to be an irritant, but I have heard if you use too much it can cause your soap to crack and crumble.
