I came across magnesium glycinate, which is bound to a type of salt if I'm not mistaken.
A type of salt, yes, specifically an amino acid, which is one of the types of complexing agents I'd recommend. The Solgar chelated Mg I've taken most recently (when I wanted to absorb it, not have it run thru me) had Mg glycinate.

I had to have my thyroid checked yesterday so I asked to have all my mineral levels checked as well. If I am low on magnesium, what would you guys recommond, a oral kind or the magnesium chloride "oil"?
Certainly not the chloride.
I'd love it if it actually helped me sleep, years of insomnia can really wear a person down.
A lot of dietary supplements for sleep have contained Mg for that purpose. It's one of those things hard to prove whether it works or not.

I work for an enterprise to test dietary supplements, and we had a prospective client for a sleep aid. We started working on a protocol to test efficacy, but I guess they weren't that interested in putting down the money because we stopped hearing from them.

I know this is an old thread, but it is pertinent to me right now. I searched the site for Mg use in CP soap and found this thread. I guess I won't be using the flakes in my soap, so I got that question answered.

Robert, I was wondering why you do not recommend the magnesium chloride oil for magnesium intake? I have been doing a lot of reading on this subject for pain relief for my husband and from what I have read, magnesium is best absorbed through the skin via the magnesium "oil" (MgCl) solution. My bag of Ancient Minerals magnesium chloride flakes arrived two days ago, and I am just starting to use them.

I don't think this has been mentioned but I made some mag oil lotion that works wonders for my restless legs at night. Really helps calm them and let me sleep.

I use magnesium oil, currently its only magnesium sulfate from epson salts because I can't afford magnesium chloride but I'm wanting to try that. A lot of people who are magnesium deficient are so because of difficulty absorbing it in the gut, and I have digestive issues so I'm going the skin route. I really do think it helps a little, I have issues with muscle spasms, twitching, and jerking movements. They get worse the more tired I am, both body tired and sleepy so its at its worst when I'm trying to sleep. And I've noticed a slight difference after using the spray on my legs an hour or so before bed. Not a big one, so who knows it could be more about the process of rubbing it into my legs and then rinsing them off under the warm water.... But whatever works. I guess I'll find out if its more about the process than the magnesium whenever I compare the magnesium chloride which is supposed to absorb better and be more bioavailable.

Oh, I wanted to add, I initially planned on also making a magnesium oil body butter product as a leave on for my legs. But with magnesium sulfate at least, if I don't rinse it REALLY well it irritates my skin and makes it super itchy. I tried just rinsing the oil off with a wet washcloth, rinsing the washcloth off and wiping my legs down and repeating. I might give it another shot when I try magnesium chloride though. I have to sit on the edge of the tub and rinse my legs really well about 20 minutes after applying the oil. Since I have to do that anyway, I also apply it really heavy and get a lot of dried salt on my legs.

Lin, I got mine on eBay. It was marketed for aquarium use but I emailed the guy and he said it was fine to use topically and in baths (just not for internal use). It was much cheaper than Ancient Minerals.

I've found that ancient minerals actually had some of the best pricing on magnesium chloride flakes. Is that what you purchased, or the oil itself? When I compared other brands of flakes the ancient minerals was actually the cheapest. I looked on ebay and on amazon, but this was a while back. I don't bother looking at the ready made oils I just don't have the cash. I'm still using my 88 cent bag of epson salts from walmart currently lol.

Made it, turned out great

This has become my top seller. I really can't make enough of it.

I'm afraid of what would happen if I combined the magnesium oil and the lye so I add the magnesium oil after I cook the soap in hot process. So, the soap comes out a little "wet" feeling after a day in the mold. I leave the log out for another day before cutting and I don't wrap them for about a week. I have a buying club with many wellness-minded people and although I do NOT make any health claims I hear from many people that their skin is softer and when used in addition to magnesium oil applied directly to the skin, they sleep better.
Hello! I am attempting this very idea right now, and I'm wondering how much magnesium oil you add to your batch after the soap is cooked in hot process. Thank you!
