Teaching CP Soap Class

I’m interested to learn in 2025 what the going tuition rate is for a Cold Process Soap Making Class that includes all materials: oils, lye, additives, fragrance, mold, spatula, gloves, safety glasses, whisk, and printed instructions. Stick blenders would be available just for class if needed.

I’m not in business. The class would be either non-profit or a fundraiser for the church or food pantry. My time would be volunteered. If the class wants, it might be possible to begin a soap crafting club.

Folks in town expressed interest in a class, and I love to share what I’ve learned. The church has a large kitchen with a sink, dishwasher, microwave, lots of counter space, and I have a portable induction cooker if needed. The advantage is there is lots of flexibility for holding the class. Another option is to work through the recreation department, but that requires fitting into their schedule and advertising it on their schedule, etc.. I can also explore the option of just doing a demonstration at the library.

Advice, please?

I don't know the going rate but I would think it would be the cost of materials plus time maybe estimate a wage of $20-30/hr for yourself.

I would probably advise doing a demonstration or 2 first so that people can see what is involved. They wouldn't have to be long and you can have a bunch of stuff prepped beforehand. Example - have everything pre-measured and make lye solution for them but set it off to the side and use a premade one so that you don't have to wait for the lye to cool.
That way they can learn the basics of safety and see how involved it is. You could talk about things to consider when starting or thinking about it.
After that if there is more interest you could do a class. I know lots of places that do that around here. Not with soap but with other things such as cooking and glass blowing.

I think it is going to vary depending on location. I’m teaching a class in April. Here’s the breakdown of the organization’s pricing.

$150 instruction
$80 2 hour class, max 10 students, includes $10 in materials for each student.

The $80 is a good price, around here, if you can find them, class can go up to $175 per student. I think that one includes a silicone mold with wood box (no cover, the smaller narrow one). I’ll be using a corrugated box with freezer paper liner.
