Well i did an oops ... got some tap water in my lye water ... about an ounce :( Will this ruin my batch - honestly I was too tired to make new lye water and the lye I received today I really hate! It's like dust - I rather the flakes...

Thanks :/

Thanks for all the info on water! I learned a lot ... It was interesting that my loaf that I got a splash if tap water in developed a small amount of spots - like soda ash - on top - but so minimal you don't even notice.

Tap water is fine as lye water.... Other than using sea water I have never used anything else..... The only time you need distilled is if you are making lotions and such.....

I used to only use distilled or purified water.
Then one day after soaping, I found out that my son had drunk the purified water and filled the bottle back up with tap water.
I never knew the difference.
So I haven't bothered with distilled or purified water since then, tap water works fine. If you can drink it you can soap it. And generally, the lye should kill any greeblies (if there are any ) in the water.

I may have said this before, but I won't give my dog local tapwater lol. An ounce will likely go unnoticed in your batch, but New Jersey tapwater and Australian tap water may be very different. I used tapwater once and won't again. I just didn't like it... I dream of having well water one day :)

Healinya, you are probably right. I generally consider our tap water (where I live) to be of pretty good quality. But when I go to my mums I can't drink the tap water cos it smells funny to me. Do you filter your tap water or buy purified for your dog/yourself? I'm just wondering what would be more cost effective.

I really should get a filtration system, but I buy distilled water from the store and also have a 5-gallon water cooler that I refill inside my supermarket.

I've used both and haven't seen a difference so I just use tap water now. Then again, our tap water is glacier fed from the mountains so it is pretty fantastic water.

What if your tap water is quite mineralized? Will it affect the outcome? We have well water and it's got a lot minerals in it, to the point we have to use filtered water for the coffee pot or use a vinegar rinse weekly, though we do drink more than 2 or 3 pots a day...
Thanks
Anna

Thanks everyone for your comments! I believe it all turned out OK. Since I'm new and the FOs contribute so much to funky things happeneing and getting familiar with which ones do what, that splash of tap water in my solution just gave me another factor to consider if something didn't come out right. But all's well so far :)

I've never had troubles with tap or well water. I use rainwater now, and you can tell a difference in soap and lather ... I get bigger lather with rainwater(filtered).

Hello:

I use filtered tap water. The unit double filters the water. Like someone has already indicted, it depends on where you live.

It is my dream to use rain water, but I want to learn how I can filter it first in case there are nasty "greebies" in it. I previously read that you need to filter it (with a Brita?) and boil it. I need to increase my investigation. If you have advice I would appreciate it. Note, I would not get run off from the roof, but would gather it from the middle of my garden.

Have a fabulous day today.

We have well water with an RO-system (reverse osmosis). According to the test we did on it, it is awesome water even without the RO, and much softer than the city water. I guess we were lucky with where we dug the well!

I use tap water - but we have WONDERFUL tap water (I think it tastes better than most bottled water) so I don't worry about it.
