Hi -

I'm making a olive oil and coconut oil soap, at 50% each. but not sure if I should keep the superfat percentage at 5 percent or maybe up it a little more, since I know that is alot of coconut oil.... thank you!

Yes, on soapcalc your cleansing levels are through the roof! 34 while the suggested range is 12-22, and your conditioning is very low: 46, with suggested range 44-69. The INS number is outside range too. Yep, looks you'll need a much higher superfat. What kind of soap are you wanting this to be?

Hopefully a more experienced member will respond . . . I don't really play with superfatting much :)

Your lauric acid will be very high. Stripping your skin of its natural oils like that and your body will just work twice as hard replacing it making your skin more oily. You can up your superfat. Do you want that much coconut oil in a soap for acne?
Why not try a nice mild 100% olive oil soap? After you do a lot more research on the fatty acid profiles in the oils you are using for your soap and the effects they have on skin.

hi there!

IMHO for a face soap I wouldn't use more than 20% coconut oil...you might consider adding some tomato or carrot to it along with your tea tree oil...baby food carrots you can add right from the jar into your soap batter, or plain tomato sauce...a couple tbsp. of either.

for a general body soap I make a "bastille-type" soap using 30% coconut & 70% olive...I use the regular golden olive, not virgin or extra virgin...it may have a bit higher cleansing # (20) than others might like but it is very high on the conditioning # (60), which to me more than compensates for the higher cleansing numbers...I use 5-6% superfat.

i'm not a huge fan of an all olive oil soap...too long to cure and kinda slimey with a weak thin lather, but olive oil when used properly is a little gem in the soaping universe.

you might like to sub an additional 10% shea or lard for the olive...soapcalc numbers are almost identical for both.

for an additional bit of bubbles dissolve 1-2 tsps. sugar to your water before adding you lye...I use 33% water (water/lye @ 2:1)

For reference a 100% CO is typically done at 20% superfat.
I just did a 90% and superfated 17% but also had cocoa butter and Shea for 10% so a small amount of that will superfat also.
If it were me, I'd research and see what others have done and I'd maybe do 10% superfat.

If you do a search on hear for "acne face soap" there are some good discussion about it. Lots of people sharing their recipes and tips for acne prone skin.

For what it's worth, I know a number of people who have significant acne on back as well as face, and they use 100% CO salt bars superfatted at 20%.

My acne bar is a variation of the one listed on the teachsoap site which has a variety of oils, including OO and grapeseed, with clay, tea tree, and lavender EOs. It is very mild and the teenagers in my life love it.
