I have a love hate of sugar scrub, the hate is because it leaves my tub/shower in a mess the stuff i have used so far is too drippy and messy and leaves too much oil on my skin. So I played around with the basic ingrediants and this is what I came up with
250 Gm of olive oil mixed with 200 Gm grated soap heated until soap softens { never really did melt} beat untill misture emulsifies { sp} . I used my stand mixer for this and it took about 5 min, threw it in the frezzer for a few min to cool and thicken. Then I mixed 150 Gm each of both brown and white sugar Dumped half of this into the oil/soap mixture once mixed well and kind of fluffy I dumped the remaining mixture in and mixed just till blended. I ended up with 6- 9 oz containers full. It is soft and grainy with out ripping my skin off {I have sensitive skin} No drippies when i use it when wet bubbles up and rinses off great and no mess in my shower. Would greatly appreciate any thoughts or in put on this Thank you Diane

That sounds awesome Diane! So it has been, what....how long with no separation? More than two weeks....sound like a winner to me. I have yet to make a scrub and a friend of mine wants me to do a salt scrub for her hubbie. I planned on making one as a basic oil/salt mix, and one with e-wax or something like that. I will definitely try your recipe as well and have her choose her fave.

Thanks for sharing!

Tanya :)

That sounds great! I love/hate scrubs too! Everything I have tried leaves me feeling oily. Thought about posting a question on how cute down on the greasies. I'll have to try this! Thanks!

My scrub (I posted the recipe) doesn't leave an oily mess in the shower. The emulsifiers in it help it go down the drain. If I use it in a bath though... ick.

Can't tolerate soap based ones, tho others do I guess.

Hello carebear - I have seen your scrub recipe too and that is what got me thinking about an emulsified scrub (I had never heard of one before then! ). May I ask what it is about the soap based ones that you don't like? If I plan on marketing a scrub I may need to know the answer.....BTW - my friend's hubbie for whom I made a salt scrub said exactly what you did and his reply to my 'why not?' question was "I can't lick it off my face/fingers if it has soap in it"...!!!

Tanya :)

P.S. Earthmother99 - how is your scrub holding up now? Any separation or change after 6 weeks?

TC

yep - that's an emulsified scrub.

why not soap? well I have dry skin to begin with, and the combination of a soap and a scrubby material is just over the top for me. i get so irritated and dry. but many people (probably younger than I am LOL) use soap scrubs without incident. Some crafters even use foaming bath butter (FBB) for the base.

your friend's hubby is... odd? LOL.

looks acts and feels like the day i made it . I love it it hasnt dried me out at all :p

I have been making the soap scrap scrub for a while, and it hold up really well. One of my testers had a non preserved scrub she used for 7 months with no problems, however she is scrupulous about not getting it wet, i wouldnt recommend no preservative for anyone else.

For those of you wondering how to cut the greasyness in your scrubs - I've been experimenting with body butter recipes that have a pretty high ratio of shea and cocoa butters - and adding sugar to them. Since the "base" is not made of 100% liquid oils, I find my skin feels nowhere near as greasy as when I use a scrub that has only liquid oils in it.

I figured that since most body butters contain an emulsifier and preservative already, and since many scrub recipes I've found include many of the same ingredients - why not mix them together and see what happens?

I'm pretty happy with the results of mixing my body butter with sugar. I know shea and cocoa butters are expensive, but once you add the sugar, a little can go a long way.

Anyway, just thought I would suggest this! If you give it a try let me know how you like it! :)
