Re: Re Sustainable Palm Oil

What exactly is "sustainable palm oil" vs palm oil?

Sustainable just means that the people who grow it do it in an environmentally friendly way. In many areas it is easier, faster, and cheaper to just burn through undeveloped land, using up the resources and leaving behind the waste and wreckage. This not only contributes to greenhouse gases but destroys animal habitats never to be reclaimed.

This is much like the forests in the USA that are sometimes clear cut for lumber and paper making... leaving the land prone to errosion and fires. And in the south, entire mountains are blown up and leveled to extract coal. There are obviously methods available that are not so destructive and can result in reusing the same land over and over... it just costs more and some people tend to get cranky about such things.

I'm told that Columbus Foods (a.k.a. Soaper's Choice) carries sustainable palm but I've never asked them to prove it. They are a reputable supplier in my opinion.
