It is always hard for me to get a straight cut, even sometimes with the pre cut wooden box..now I received my crinkle cutter and the cutter doesn't fit through the slots of the box...so I had to cut free hand.
Yikes..that is even harder to get an even cut, any tricks?

I think it just takes some practice. I line up my soap log so it is sitting straight - use both hands on the cutter for even pressure on both sides and just go for it. For me, trying to be too careful cutting almost always messes me up, so now I just cut through it with confidence! I'm getting pretty good at it. I don't measure, as I don't sell, but it would be easy enough to mark it off with a ruler. I really like the way it looks on otherwise plain soap.

I turn the log on it's side so that the top of the soap faces me on the counter. Then, I put a ruler next to the log and mark the soap lightly in 1 inch increments (just a little nick on the bottom, where the ruler meets the log). The, I turn it over and do the same thing so that when I'm done, I have little marks on both edges (sides) of the top of my log. Turn your log back upright and line your cutter or knife up with the marks on both sides and try to push straight down. It works well for me. I hope that wasn't too ridiculously complicated. Just thought I'd share.

I mark mine similar to sudsycat, but with another bar of soap as a guide and not a ruler, I only mark and cut one at a time so if you happen to cut not quite straight on one you can rectify it on the next one so they are not all out of wack.

I also find it helpful if I cut my soap on the table because it's lower than the counter.
It feels less awkward and I can keep my arms straighter, if that makes any sense?

I am going to make a miter box to fit my crinkle cutter. I know that not everybody can do that. Those who know me would not be suprised, I make lots of stuff myself.
