Here is are some interesting articles on 'when soda ash is NOT soda ash', which talk about what looks like soda ash, is not always soda ash:

Kevin Dunn re: soda ash or not soda ash: http://cavemanchemistry.com/HsmgJojoba2011.pdf

I know this is coming a year later, but I found this info from Kevin Dunn very interesting, but I'm wondering if there is accompanying info about what is causing all those things that aren't soda ash? Maybe you just had to be at the presentation. I'd love any additional info about the other causes and possible cures.

Not on his caveman chemistry website (which I don't know if he does much upkeep on anymore). You could try and get a copy of his book, Scientific Soapmaking although I don't recall if he addresses the issue in depth there or not. Or you could try contacting him directly. He is a chemistry professor at Hamden-Sydney College. If you Google him you can obtain contact information. He may or may not be able to put his hands on the 10 year-old-lecture material. I know I personally would not be able to if I had been at that particular lecture, but he certainly may. But if it were me, I'd try his book first, just in case.

Here is another link if you want to test to confirm something is truly soda ash, but it doesn't really answer your question either, although it does suggest that in some cases what it might be. http://www.snegovick.com/soda-ash-is-not-soda-ash/
