I’m thinking of trying spectrum 100% hydrogenated palm oil instead of Walmart shortening (even though Walmart product is 1/3 the price)- mainly because I don’t trust Walmart to not change their shortening in the future.

I’d really appreciate reading any experiences with this product or hydrogenated palm oil in general :)

Also - do I put palm oil into the soap calculator even though it is hydrogenated palm oil?

I didn't think Spectrum hydrogenated their oil. I thought that was their thing- non hydrogenated oils. I've used their regular palm oil. It's great- if you can get your hands on it. I feel like the price has spiked recently and none of my usual places carry it. I used it successfully for years. It also made a great pie crust.

Yes, you are correct, I use it as well with great success!

Y’all are correct. Spectrum does not hydrogenyze their palm oil. My mistake.

I found it at my grocery store. Is $12 for 24 Oz pricey? It seems pricey!

That seems really pricy to me!
But if you're just gathering materials to try out soaping and are doing a few oils in small batches...It might not be as expensive as ordering a whole bunch of an oil you're not crazy about.

As an aside,
I got a really good bulk deal on palm oil from essential depot a couple months back.

Yes, it is definitely pricey for use in soap. This is the brand I use if I need shortening in baking. I generally don’t use much palm in my soap recipes but upon occasion I make a soap with palm. I much prefer beef tallow, bear tallow and lard😊

So - does palm oil move speed up trace compared to part tallow-lard-soy shortening?

This went from liquid to thick goopy custard quickly.
