I've been looking at recipes from various websites and am wondering if for a Goat Milk recipe sunflower oil is preferred to soybean oil and why. Is it a personal presence?

It's mostly personal preference. While the oils aren't quite identical and do have a slightly different fatty acid profile, they seem to end up pretty much the same in soap.

High soy recipes can be susceptible to rancidity and DOS. I'm not sure about sunflower as I don't use it, but from its profile it should be the same.

Some people object to the fact that most American soybean oil is GMO, so that may be another consideration depending on your audience.

If using either oil, I would add several drops of either Vit. E or rosemary oleoresin to the soap to help prevent DOS and rancidity.

If you can find it, you can always try using high oleic sunflower. It's fatty acid profile is more like olive oil and it has much less of the DOS-prone linolieic acid in it compared to soybean and regular sunflower.

IrishLass :)

Guess Im the odd one yet again  I use soybean oil alot, and 'knock on wooden soap dishes' I haven't had an issue with DOS or rancidity 'yet'..and I have bars that are 2+ yrs old.

Interesting...I've ordered some Vit. E to add just in case. Since I'm a new soaper there's still tons to learn. Thanks all!

How would one know if a bar has gone DOS?

DOS stands for Dreaded Orange Spots and the most obvious thing is the soap will have orange spots on it that were not there before. After a while these spots may have a rancid smell to them. It wont hurt you or the soap, but it looks terrible. In the past I would use those bars myself and cut out the spots. Haven't seen them in years. (thank goodness) I do add small amounts of vitamin E to my oils and although I have no proof, I credit that to not seeing any more DOS.

Sounds like Vit. E drops may be the way to go for a short period of time at least.

Thanks!

I love sunflower and use Cibarias Mid Oleic without any problems, using it up to 20 I add in ROE (rosemary Oleoresin) to the entire 5 gallons after opening it. I adore the Canolive soap recipes on millersoap.com using high amounts OO and Canola. I have keep these soap for over a year using once in a while so they would get wet and never have they come down with dos. I first acquied the Canolive III soap through a swap and loved it

I love sunflower oil in soap. I get the great value brand from walmart. It doesn't say it, but it's HO sunflower oil.
