Actually the current zeitgeist is leaning towards using 'they'. Which nags me because I had a very tough grammar teacher in school and 'they' is plural. But languages change, I keep telling myself.

I will never accept text speak though. :)

They is not just plural. It can be used when gender is not known of could be either.

"The next person to walk in to the room - they will be the one to get the last seat"

In the past, a masculine or feminine form was taken based on context, but that is likely to cause offense these days, just like assuming 'she' for soapers :)
 
If I get mistaken for a "she" now, I'll just assume it's because my skill is getting closer to that of the rest of the ladies here. :thumbup:

I was always taught that the grammatically correct phrasing was "he or she" when gender was unknown.

"The next person to walk in to the room - he or she will be the one to get the last seat"

I always hated it though lol. I much prefer to use "they".
