So that brand Dr. Adorable caused the rancidity? Do other brands work fine then?
I don't know for absolutely sure - I reached out to Dr. Adorable but they refused to help me - so, they are off my list. I have bought Palm Kernel Oil flakes from Wholesale Supplies Plus with no problems at all. I don't use this very much these days as this is a very cleansing oil and I prefer less cleansing. The brand from WSP is Crafters Choice.

I recommend "soaper's Choice" for your PKO but the smallest amount is 10 pounds. If you want a smaller amount you can try "wholesale supplies plus" but they have a 9-14 day wait for shipping. Your best bet will be Amazon Prime if you have it. You can get as little as 4 ounces.
I've been using PKO from Wholesale Supplies Plus for years. I think it comes in 5# bags. When a formula calls for coconut oil I use 1/2 and 1/2 CO and PKO (recalculate lye). Have never had a problem.

I go to the grocers and pick up some cheap coconut oil and try replacing the pko with that in one small batch.
Would be faster and cheaper then ordering more pko from a different supplier.

IMHO, the smell after two weeks into curing that you detect is normal for nonscented soap. I notice a "special" smell, not pleasant to my nose, in my nonscented soaps. I never use PKO but if my memory serves me right it was with nonrefined extra virgin olive oil (which I stopped using for soapmaking, use it for eating instead).
By the way, why is a great majority of all soap, industrial or handmade, scented? In my young days, in the fifties, soap was only two or three kinds, none smelling very pleasant. But then it was only used for washing and cleaning, not for scenting, moisturizing, conditioning, bubbling, lathering, ... Also, there were only few hypersensitivities or allergies.
Maybe this is connected and you simply smell what is simple, pure soap smelling stronger if oils are unrefined.
