Hello Everyone,

I have this issue and it's been bugging me. I normally let my ungelled soaps sit for 3 or 4 days before cutting them. For the most part they looked okay until I got to the very bottom, and that's when they either cracked or crumbled. At first, I thought that my blade was dull, so I tried a new one - same problem! I even put them on a rack to let them dry out evenly before cutting, but that didn't help either. Any suggestions? I would appreciate all your help.

Thank you,

Melonie

have you tried cutting them with a thin gauge piano wire or guitar wire? kind of like a cheese slicer... works wonders :)

Hi Ian,

Thank you for the suggestion. No, I have never tried a piano or guitar wire. The thing is, I use a soap cutting mold that comes with its own blades. I really like this mold because it helps me cut my soaps into even bars. Would a piano or guitar string work with soap cutting molds? Also, do you have to tie the string to something or just wrap it around your fingers? Please let me know.

Thanks,

Melonie

Id say that it could work with a soap cutting mold (are you talking about a mitre box or something similar??)

I would def not wrap it around your fingers...thing papercut to the next level... could literally de-glove the tip of your finger...ouuuch...just thinking about it makes it hurt!

youd want to affix it to a piece of wood somehow...or a few pieces so youre assured that its straight... and keep your fingers safe too :)

Hi Ian,

Thank you for your advice. I will look into it.

Have a great day,

Melonie

Have you tried cutting sooner like 24 hours out of the mold rather than waiting several days?

Hi Mandolyn,

Yes, I tried to cut them after 24 hours and they crumbled like fudge. Frustrating!

i know what you mean about the bottom crumbling. definitely go with violin e strings or fishing line or similar to cut your soap. some people use a wire cheese cutter, which is fine as well. a knife creates too much drag (and is a drag to use...sorry). just use a mitre box and everything will cut cleanly.

Before I bought a wire cutter I used a fishing line that I tied around 2 pens, that was way better than my sharpest thin knife.

Soap cracking when cutting

I notice that my soap cracks or the edges crumble if I leave it to sit too long or have added more FO then needed. My husband made me a soap cutter, but in those conditions it still crumbles at the edges with some FO.
