Smelly Pinecones

My mother has some pinecones that in the days of yore she would drop a little eye dropper full of some sort of scent on them to make them smell nice for Christmas. We're not really sure what this product actually was, but she asked me if I could make any sort of nice smelling something to put on her pinecones to achieve a similar effect. Can we just eye drop onto the cones a little bit of straight up FO or EO? Is it just going to dissipate immediately? Would it be better to dilute it for any reason?
