I ordered WAY too much lye! I'm pretty new to soap making and don't know how I'm going to be able to use up this much lye before it goes bad (I've heard it doesn't last forever? How long does it keep?)

I was thinking I may be able to sell some to people online (for pretty cheap!), to get rid of some of it, but I don't know if there are any precautions against shipping it in the mail. Does anyone know?

I have about 50 kg of it and with me just making soap for myself and a few friends/family members, I don't think I will use it up in the next year even! I got a great deal on it when I got it, and since I heard they may not be able to get it after this one time, I ordered a lot. Eeeeek! Now I know of another supplier that I can get it from any time, so I'm not concerned about keeping a lot on hand.

P.S. - I live in Canada - so would shipping it to the US be a problem?

Hi Ashley. I sell lye online here in the US. I cannot ship outside the 48 states very easily, or at all. Lye is regulated heavily here in the US as to how to ship, how to package, and proper marking the box with the correct identification code. It cannot ship in any manner except ground, so no air. The USPS will NOT ship it either. I have to ship UPS, Fed-Ex, or DHL.

Lots of regulations here in the USA I have not even gone into.

Hmm, thanks for the info! Maybe I could sell some to the Canadian members. I know it is a lot harder to get a hold of lye in Canada! Should I just ask at Canada Post if there are any special regulations?
