For a present I got a bottle of sheep milk from my Amish friend.
Would like to try to make soap.
What oils would go nicely with sheep milk? It would be my first ever experiment with milk in soap.
I know that first I add milk to oils and second I add 1:1 lye solution. But what oils would be the best?
 
First if you have never used any milk in a soap recipe, I would highly recommend that you research using milk because using liquid milk can be a very trying experience. I use powdered milks because the powdered version does not come with all the problems of the liquid milk.

The other thing you should do before you match it up with other oils, is figure out what the fat profile is for sheeps milk.
 
I usually use my regular recipe with milk soap. I do put the soap in the freezer, after pouring, for several days to keep it from gelling.
 
You can use milk in any almost any recipe. The sugars in the milk will scorch if the temperature gets too high, but there are ways to get around that. I use the “split” method when I use liquid milk. The lye is dissolved in an equal weight of water and the remaining liquid (milk) is blended into the oils. I soap as cool as possible and put the loaf mold in the freezer, or if I’m making individual bars, I just put them in the refrigerator. I also stay away from any fragrances or additives, like sugar or honey, that will cause the batter to accelerate trace or heating. Another option is to freeze the milk before you mix it with the lye. If you choose this method, you will want to add the lye slowly so the mixture does not heat up. If it starts turning yellow, let it cool down more before you add more lye.
