I have been playing around with my shampoo--I read that the PH needs to be lower and so I read a lot on the internet and found that people add acid to lower the PH--this was not specific to handmade soap though.

Anyway, I added some acid to some grated soap and it lowered the PH However, it did not lather at all. My sister, a chemist but not a soap maker, said that I over did the acid and reversed to some extent the chemical reaction which made soap in the first place.

So less acid and it did work--my hair felt smoother and was less fly-away. The bad news is my concotion stinks and has low lather. I did not want to purchase anything till I tested the theory, so I used acid from my kitchen--lemon juice.

Any ideas on what kind of acid I could add to adjust the PH lower and that would be gentle and would not smell bad?

BTW I like the smell of lemons--the combo of soap and Lemon juice made a foul stench for some reason

I always try to make mine clear. I used boric acid once and it made my shampoo nasty looking and only lowered the PH 1 to 1.5 points. I threw it out and said never again. Also use a ph meter and not test strips.
