Made a 2lb batch of liquid soap. It is so beautiful (80 OO/20 CO) and a rich amber color, but it smells like ick. I know that is from the olive oil during the cooking. The whole house smelled like that for dayyys....

I did scent a small batch after the soap cooled. It's quite cloudy. Should I have just scented the soap before it cooled? Can I still get clear soap when I add eo/fo?

Thanks!

I think that some fragrance oils do make the soap cloudy. You might check a tiny amount with a drop or two of fragrance oil the next time before scenting a larger batch. You might also color the cloudy batch to disguise the cloudiness.

Personally, I don't care about cloudiness, but there was another thread on this topic ...

From what I vaguely remember: heating the soap, with adding glycerine, polysorbate together with the EO.

I tried looking up liquid soap for other posts but no results would come up for me.

I suppose I don't mind the cloudiness either. I was just wondering if anyone else went through that. I used poly 20 also, I suppose I'll try with glycerine too if I can find the post.

thanks!

I just scented some the other day. This is only my second batch of liquid soap though.

My first batch was cloudy, but I rather think it was from using non distilled water. I just used purified from a water filter. My first batch was scented with eucalyptus and tea tree EOs, which I added right after the borax/water mix.

The second batch is done 'sequestering' and is amber colored and crystal clear. We will use it it for laundry, dishes, and also plan to use some for liquid hand soap this time. DH does the laundry and he requested unscented for that. So I separated the batch into 1/3 and 2/3 portions and scented the 1/3 that I want to use for hand soap while it was still hot. I used a FO this time: orange clove. As I wanted a bit more clove scent, I also added a tad of clove EO thinking, hey, it is liquid soap, it wont seize! The scented portion is also crystal clear. However, it got an orange tint from the FO, which I find very pretty. No cloudiness though. The scent is wonderful too!

I have to add that the last liquid soap was cloudy, and this did not bother us as far as using it. It worked fine and we used all of it!

So yes, it could be your fragrance, but in my case I am pretty sure the distilled water was key to a clear liquid soap.

My soap started out clear and amber. I use distilled water in all my soaps. I think that next batch of liquid I'm going to scent while it's still warm when i add the water to the paste and see what happens to that. With the lemongrass eo the soap colored from amber to the greenish-yellow of lemongrass, which is quite nice!

I used it in my hair for shampoo to see how it felt and smelled. I love it :) Now I'm going to try some unscented in the laundry.

Every instruction set or book I read about liquid soap tells you to add the scent to the diluted neutralized soap while is hot, so this might be the only problem.

Thanks for telling us about the color change with lemongrass EO, very nice information. I have not bought any lemongrass EO yet, but I might, since infusing my prolific lemongrass in oil did not do much scent wise.

Did you add anything to it before using it as a shampoo?

If you wait until the soap is cool to add fragrance, yes, it will cloud. You need to add it warm, after dilution.

Eta: thanks for the note about lemongrass. I'm kind of on a lemongrass kick right now. My laundry balls, all-purpose cleaner, and room spray are all lemongrass scented right now.

Thanks for this bit of advice. I added my fragrance to my soap when it was cooled. It turned cloudy. So I decided to try heating it after the fact. It is now clear, but still warm. I will have to see how it does as it cools. But hopefully it should turn out fine. I will post as to how it goes.

This is a very old thread and only one member in the original discussion is still active. The Forum discourages "necroposting" for a variety of reasons. See: https://www.soapmakingforum.com/threads/smf-culture-and-tone.56833/

If you want to share the results of scenting your liquid soap, why not start a new thread? If you like, you can reference this one in your new thread as the source of your inspiration, so others can read where you got the suggestion.

And head over to the Introduction forum and share a little about yourself!

My lemongrass EO never changes the color of my soap, so I suspect this is a supplier issue, not a lemongrass EO issue.

I add my EO/FO to a small amount of warm diluted soap to test them before adding to the whole batch. And I add them while the soap is just cool enough to stick a bare finger in (I can tolerate a LOT of heat on bare fingers), so somewhere below the flash point, somewhere above room temperature.

@DeeAnna I saw it was a new post on a necro thread, but people still need answers. Sorry!

I haven't made a lot of liquid soap but I scented my last lot after it had been sequestered and divided. My bottle I scented with a mixture of orange, lemon and lime and the soap clouded but after a few days it cleared up and is clear again.
