I never tried one. What is the allure? Trying to decide if I want to invest time and material in making a batch.

Well, it's all about a person's preference in my opinion. Salt bars can be very exfoliating and I find most people use Himalayan pink salt in their salt bars, which is known to be very good for the skin.

"Beneficial Properties
Himalayan Pink Salt has a rich mineral content that includes over 84 minerals and trace elements such as: calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper and iron. This salt is recognized for its beautiful pink color, high mineral content, and its therapeutic properties. Regular consumption of Himalayan Pink Salt provides essential minerals, trace elements, balances electrolytes, supports proper nutrient absorption, eliminates toxins, balances the body’s pH, normalizes blood pressure, and increases circulation and conductivity. It can also assist with relief from arthritis, skin rashes, psoriasis, herpes, and flu and fever symptoms."

Just wanted to add that in there to give an idea as to why some people like it. Hope that helps!

I use a variety of salts and love them all - Pink Himalayan, Aussie black (vermiculite), Hawaiian Alaea red, and sea salt. I use food grade. I'm always on the lookout for other gourmet salts, and have several I haven't yet soaped with. Some salts I find to be totally excellent for facial soap - I also love the way it feels, its heaviness, its texture. I also pair them with complementary clays. If all of it sold like hotcakes, I'd prefer making it over pretty much anything else, that's how much I love it :)

I think more people use sea salt than pink Himalayan, and I don't find most of mine to be very exfoliating. They're gently exfoliating due to their nature, unless I use additives like seaweed powder.

Maybe you can pick up a bar of salt soap and see if it is something you enjoy? I made my first batch a week ago and it was a lot of fun. There are several types of salts and there are special things you have to do to your recipe to make them work so make sure you do your research if you do decide to make one.

They don't do much for me because my skin doesn't like high CO soaps, regardless of superfat level. However, people I know who suffer from acne (face and/or body) love them as does my husband when he's particularly dirty/stinky.

I agree, the only way to find out is to try one.

I love salt bars and have recipes that use from 50% - 80% combinations of coconut and babssu oils. I use both fine grain pink Himalayan sea salt and fine grain sea salt. They are not drying at all and actually leave my skin very silky smooth. Not sure about any exfoliating since I don't apply the bar directly to my skin (they can be a bit scratchy this way) but use a pouf - but love the way they leave my skin feeling.
