Ohhhhh all very good questions indeed.... where can I get some snazzy lab attire? Experiments are in order!

Custom lab attire available. The top of the line attire is worn by teams of "break in techs" over clean suits. They are the best, longest lasting, no break in required so you can maintain concentration in your scientific endeavors. Pricing is confidential, most don't ask, but if you must know, pm me and I will see that you get a price list. Normally just the price list is $49 through my paypal account and they are going fast but since you're a forum member... :D

Strawberryred....
what is denditric salt? i had no idea salt bars required longer curing! I thought it was the same 4 wk period! why is that?

Not strawberryred. Dendritic salt has a larger surface area which helps it to hold more fragrance than other types of salt. It also helps to prevent or reduce clumping which is really nice if you make bubble bath powder.

do you mix your EO or FO with the dendritic salt? then add to the soap batter? I have just used sea salt wich is NaCl crystals, cubic and not dendritic. I can see how the increased surface area could work for you in scent retention. I can also understand your 1 tps PPO better, since the difference in price would be significant.

Yes, I mix the EOs or FOs with the dendritic salt. But I don't use it in soap. I use it for bath bombs, salts and bubble bath powder. But now that you mention it, it would be good in salt bars. It's cheaper than sea salt and regular table salt. I buy it from WSP and it's one of the items I still buy from them. I haven't found a better price anywhere else.

I don't want the lab attire. I want the lab assistant Nelly. I can drive down this week and pick her up.

Good technical assistants are tough to come by. I doubt you would be able to entice Nelly away. We have invested heavily in treats as part of her tech training and her company loyalty is unquestionable.

Salt. The last container of plain old Morton Iodized salt purchased was much courser than before. I wonder what's up in the salt business? Sure will use it quicker.

Darn. I guess I should have started training Ripley when we first got her. She thinks she deserves treats just because of her appearance and not her brains. Typical blonde.

Hello, I am addicted to salt bars, have been for a while but I am really out of control now. I think my obsession is due to two reasons, they are so easy and quick to make and they hold any scent I put in them, even fleeting top notes, and hold the scent for longer than non salt bars. Does anyone know the reason for this? Some assumptions I am making to support my theory:

The salt is a fixative?

and/or....

Salt bars do not cook for 24 hours, usually are only in the mold for 2 hours therefore releasing less EOs?

I am no chemist, although I was pretty good at chemistry. Anyone know the true reason for this? Or is it all in my head?

Serfmunke, I have been trying salt soaps with Himalayan Salt, would it be too forward to ask what type of salt you use? If you don't want to answer I will certainly understand.

Fran2, I would be happy to tell you, if I didn't I would be a jerk. I have learned so much from this message board and owe it all to the lovely ladies and some gents, who share 95% of what they know! I just use Morton Coarse Kosher Salt and not because it is Kosher. I just picked it up from the selection at my local grocery store and gave it a go. Turns out I love it! I use the salt at roughly 60%. I have done 100% and like 60 better.

And I just purchased some Pink Him. salt and cannot wait to use it for my heart shaped salt bars for Valentine's Day! Eeek! Excited!

It doesn't have to be the same recipe. Everyone could make their usual recipe. I meant for everyone to use the same amount of salt such as 1 tsp ppo.

Hazel, yes, I agree with all you said about the swap. We are headed into busy times and I know I cannot put a valiant effort into a swap right now but would love to after the holidays.

I also agree that we use the same amount of regular salt, table? at 1tsp PPO in one bar and no salt in the other. Also use the same recipe for both our bars and of course the same scent.

So I am going to mark my calendar to remind myself to revisit this post and revive it once the holiday madness subsides and before Valentine's Day picks up

Yes? Good? Am I missing anything?

Thanks for the information! So nice of you. That is all I have is Pink Himalayan I just bought 5 lbs more a few weeks ago, and had some from my last order. Right now I am going to try to grate the bars that leave my skin dry as a piece of dried up wood, LOL... I have a long way to go, I am very ambitous and I do not have a smaller mold than 5 lbs. My husband made it for me! So, of course, I use that one. On another post, a nice member told me to grate the soap, make a new batch high in CO, and superfat high, and add the grated soap, so I think I will try that. But what a pain in the neck to grate the soap. I have two bad batches. One is hard as a rock, and the other is still in the curing stage, so I will work with that one first, easier to grate up.

Again, thank you for all of the more experience members for helping out us newbie's.

I buy my Himalayan Salt from Salt Works, and I think it was a good price. It was 19.00 with free shipping, I bought the small grain, I think I should have went with the fine grain. But I will make due with what I have.

Have a great week soaping all you soapers!

Fran

do you use CC milk or just water in your salt bars? I've tried them with the CC milk and am curious about the difference if I made them with only water! thanks

I make mine with water only, superfat at 20% and add scent for the final weight, salt included, otherwise the bars are faintly scented which is fine for some but I find most like to smell the EOs. I have used brewed coffee (most favorite salt bar look), and brewed tea as the water and they both behaved so nicely. I have yet to have a serious problem with salt bars, hence my love for them:)

Just a quick question. If I were to use a fragrance that usually separates in CP but, can be stick blended in and mixed it into the salt before adding it to the soap base would it still separate?

good idea serfmunke!! have used stinging nettle tea in my CP and it's a lovely lime green but (duh?) never thought about it in the salt bars!! will give it a try and see the difference if any! happy soaping!

Dudeitsashley I do not know the answer to that, sounds like another experiment

Serfmunke thank you for your reply and I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and give it a try! I will post my findings once I get all my supplies :D

What do you mean by separate? Do you mean the FO causes ricing?
