Do you add salt and sugar to your water? I read that the salt makes the soap harder, and the sugar adds lather. I have done it a couple of times, but the soap isn't ready to use yet, so I don't know if it worked. What is your experience?

i add both to every batch. but... i use sodium lactate (natural salt and humectant) at about a TBSP ppo in the lye liquid, AND about a TBSP plain old white sugar ppo in whatever milk mixture i'm adding at trace. i love them both -- the SL for hardness, the sugar for bubbles -- both natural and even if you don't think they add all that much, they sure as heck can't do anything but help, and certainly can't hurt -- at least not imho :)

oh, and to really determine if it works or if you like it, take the same basic recipe and do one with and one without the sugar and/or salt. experiment and see what happens. that's the fun!
