Has anyone successfully duplicated the Sal Suds liquid soap? I have been using it for a long time now for washing dishes. I dilute it with water and 1/2 tsp castor oil and put it in a pump bottle. It works Great - no film left on hands or dishes, but I would love to make a comparable liquid soap to use on my dishes.

Ingredients: Water, sodium lauryl sulfate, coco-betaine, decyl glucoside, abies siberica (siberian fir) needle oil, picea glauca (spruce) leaf oil, citric acid, sodium sulfate, sodium chloride, potassium hydroxide.

Not to burst your bubble or anything, but at $12.59 per 32 oz, I think it would be cheaper to buy the stuff ready made. A quick bit of research on the cost of ingredients to make it should sway your decision one way or the other.

I will clarify what I am wanting: A homemade lye based - KOH - liquid soap. Pine and Spruce oil sounds like a useful and effective additive for sure to help cut grease! I have made shampoo and hand soaps using the KOH and we are enjoying them very much! I feel the exciting challenge to make a scum and film free liquid dish soap :) The adventure is on!

Based on the ingredients, this is not a lye-based soap but a syndet (or perhaps a hybrid with very little real soap in it). Pure lye-based soap is prone to leave some film on dishes, especially if you have hard water. (It is also not good for hair, but you can read about that a lot on this forum if you search for it.)

Gotcha! I use whatever liquid soap I have on hand to wash dishes. I put it in a foamer at a rate of 1 part soap to 3 parts water. One pump on a sponge, wipe, and dishes/glasses/silverware rinse clean with no soapy residue. Sometimes I do not rinse each piece but rather stack the dishwasher and run it on the rinse cycle. ;)
