A friend of mine will be assisting her 13 year old to learn the art of soap making. I want to get her the cutting tool. My options are a knife or a wavy /straight cutter. The knife is scary for me and I’m not sure if the wavy/ straight cutter is a good uption.

I think a knife is ok for a 13 yr if supervised but they really aren't great for cutting soap. I'd go with a wavy cutter or a wire cheese cutter.

I think wire cheese cutters are workable and economical. I’ve never used a wavy cutter so I have no opinion on those.

I have to agree with the cheese cutter. You can get one for less than $20 at amazon, and they will work well for a new adventure.
Long ago I repurposed my $1 thrift store pastry knife (aka bench cutter, pastry scraper, pastry tool, etc.) for cutting soap. Wish I'd been the one to think of marketing them as soap cutters - I could probably be retired by now.
Is she making M&P or cold process? Wire cutters do not work for M&P
If MP a good straight edge bench cutter. If CP/HP a cheese cutter.

I’ve been making CP soap since I was 12 all by my self! She should be fine!! But a cheese cutter seems like a good idea, because it can be frustrating when you can’t cut a straight line!
She will be doing, cold process.

Please, could you explain why a wire cutter does not work for M&P ?
I make cutters for New Zealand soap makers and I've not heard this before.
I may be because MP is cured soap. Cured soap is hard. The wire will stretch and snap sooner than later. Unless there is a wire that will stand up to my Soap that I’m not aware of.

Ah, thank you - that does explain it. I'm not a soap maker myself, so I never presume to tell my customers how - or rather, when -to cut their soap, but I sometimes suggest it should be done while it's still relatively soft.
Mind you, the cutter use high-tensile wire and as far as I know it hasn't broken yet except at the weak point, the loop on one end where it's attached to the frame.
And even when a user over-tightened the arm, the wire didn't break, just bent the arm!

THank you, I don’t know why I didn’t think about making one. I made my single cutter that’s why I had all the materials. Sometimes it needs a little jog of the memory.
Perhaps you should ask mom what would be appropriate.

Well... I made the decision by making one, I think a wire cutter is best. Her mom is my best friend so, she would be just fine .
