I've used ROE in one of my soap recipes, I add it to my melted oils before the lye solution. Usage rate will vary depending on the concentration of carnosic acid content. I get mine at 7.5% carnosic acid and the recommended usage for that strength is .02% - .08% of your oils. It can affect the color of your soap, though. First it'll turn bright red/orange when you add the lye water to your oils but after it cured the ROE will make your soap turn a nice green.

If you go to Soap Making Resource, you can read about ROE and all the things it can and can't do.
I use it in my CP soaps, although many feel it's not necessary. It's sort of a "belt and suspenders" type
of thing for me. I use very little and it does turn bright red/orange at first, but have never had to turn green
after cure.

I add it to my large jugs of oils that tend to have a short shelf life like hemp, grapeseed or flax seed. That way the whole bottle is protected to some degree. At least I think it is, although I tend to be leery of those oils anyway...

Kevin Dunn's testing of various preservatives for soap making: http://cavemanchemistry.com/HsmgDos2006.pdf

If I read this correctly, ROE outperforms Vit E, though, neither is as good as a non natural preservative BHT and Sodium Citrate combo.

But, it's your choice.

:)

Ok so I read the article also. I am not the sharpest tack in the box but I didn't think we needed preservatives in our soaps? I do use it in my lotions. So what are You thinking put it in the bottles for shelf life or in the soap because of dos?
I don't sell but I do give.

I think putting it in the oil bottles for shelf life of the oils is how I've summarized what I've read so far. Whatever you put in the oils to preserve it will end up in your soap too.

If you have an oil with a short shelf life, which extends to the soap if you have a lye discount (in my opinion) an antioxidant will help with shelf life for your soaps. That's what these are, really... ROE, Vit E and Grapefruit Seed Extract. Antioxidants which help keep your soap from oxidizing, which is DOS.

I use a minimal amount in my oils on the shelf to help them last longer and a minimal amount in the soap batch. For lotions made with water in the mix, you need to get the big stuff... chemicals. Some people use a natural preservative in lotion made from some far east plant (I don't remember the name). But, someone found and compared the chemical analysis of that plant to a man made version and it was the same compound, so it didn't really matter.

This is a graphic blog post by the Soap Queen that illustrates it. http://www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/lotion/talk-it-out-tuesday-preservatives/ I use a preservative in lotions and when you consider that you are only using about 1% of the total ingredients. (100% + 1%, so if you have 200 gms lotion that's 2 gms preservative) it's really not that much and you are safe. Different ones have different usage amounts tho. So, pick one that works for you. My lotions, after opening, are still good after 1 year.
