Hi,

I heard the soap can be made with hydrogenated fats (oils). I looked up a supplier online who sells refined hydrogenated soy bean, coconut and palm oils. Does anyone have an idea if refined oils are the same good for soap making as unrefined natural oils? Or would they have a negative effect on skin in soap? I also heard soap made from soy bean oil as a single soap turns unusable and bad smelling quite soon. Is it the same with hydrogenated soy bean oil or not? I know that Crisco shortening does for pretty good soap and it's mostly the hydrogenated soy bean.

Hydrogenated oils/fats have a higher sap number than the same oil/fat
that is not hydrogenated.

Hydrogenated fats last longer in storage.
Hydrogenated fats make a harder bar of soap.

Thanks for the answer. What is sap number btw?

How about using refined oils? Anybody can share an experience with them? Are they any different from non-refined oils for soap making?

Some sap numbers can be hard to find. If you can't find it, you may have to hot process the oil and slowly add lye little by little until the PH stays at ~10.

IMO, you'd have a hard time finding oils that are not refined.

BTW, hydrogenated soybean oil is less likely to develop spots since it's more stable.

Hey,

what do you mean by hot process? And how do I know when the PH is 10?

I tried to look for more suppliers in my country and all I found was refined deodorised coconut and palm oils. Is this kind of oils suitable for soap making?

I tried a lye calculator and it lists different amounts of lye for different superfat amounts. What does a superfat amount mean? (they list superfat amounts from 1 to 10) Does it mean that it's more oil added initially than it will take to saponify with the amount of lye? As far as I know superfatting is done at trace when the oil has been saponified :?
