HI!

I have been searching and scouring the web all over to try to find 2 recipes or at least the basics so I can make my own recipe. To no avail :x

I am looking for a sugar scrub recipe that contains no preservatives (I have a customer who has alergies to them, she says). She has requested that I make her a sugar scrub with the same ingredients as one of my soaps she loves (which contains all sorts of yummy stuff like nettle, devils shoelace and borage to name a few~) She says it's great for her sensitive skin and doesn't aggrivate the many allergies she has. She wants a sugar scrub that does the same.

I'm not sure how long a sugar scrub will last in the mail without any preservative in it. Is there a recipe that will last 2 weeks in the mail (she lives in Canada so it takes a while for her to get things)?

My second question is about lip balm. I have never made it but want to. I ordered beeswax from brambleberry but is there a way to make it with parafin wax without adding any vasalene to it?

If she's very careful and doesn't get water in the scrub it should be fine. Not sure about the lip balm question since mine are really basic.

Thank you! I'll notify her of the water issue. I have a case of 2000 nice bamboo spoons I bought on a trip to Japan, I guess I can give her one of those to use. I've been trying to decide what to do with them. This might be it! :)

She says she's allergic to preservatives? I find this a little surprising since the percentage of preservatives is so small compared to other ingredients. It makes me wonder what other products she uses. But I suppose it is possible...

Do you have liability insurance? Skin diseases can be nasty. That being said, if your scrub is anhydrous you don't have to put a preservative in it. Just make sure the customer knows never to leave it open so it is exposed to air/humidity, don't let water drip in it and always use a sterile implement to scoop out the scrub.

I can't answer your question about lip balms. I've never used paraffin or vaseline in them.

Yes I have liability insurence and am a certified herbalist. I've found a few recipes online for lip balm that call for parafin wax and petrolium jelly (vasalene), but the vasalene in it makes me nervous. I could see it melting in a hot shipping truck and oozing out of the container :(

how can one be allergic to preservatives across the board? the source and chemistry vary widely.

regardless, if she's decided this is the source of her allergy then I would give the option of mixing her own scrub up fresh each time. give her a base and tell her to spoon (ever so carefully with a clean spoon) some into a bowl and add her abrasive and use that. and throw away any already mixed.

but frankly, I wouldn't touch the whole deal with a 10 foot pole.

vaseline? i've never used vaseline. you want a blend of oils, butters, and waxes. scour the web - there are recipes out there.

Yes I also thought it was odd, since preservatives are in practically everything we use on a daily basis but she swears by it so who am I to say no....Giving her a base is a good idea too, I'll swing that by her as well. Thank you!
