ok, I'm going to try my luck at making Salt Soap Bar.... I got the recipe and
looked at the items needed and put them down for ordering and got really confused.
I can order all the main ingredients with all the optional additives , but, then the last thing on the recipe list is Grated colored soap bits..... Well, that stinks... I haven't made enough soap to get 300-400gr. of these bits.... So,
can I just use my soap color dye and have that to put color in it???

I thought I better ask before I just go and do it and then find out that the sea salt or something will go ahead and have some kind of reaction from the color dyes......Which would probably be my luck.....lol

the recipe does have Orris Root Powder, Titanium Dioxide, Rosemary Extract, Grapefruit Seed Extract, Lavender EO, Eucalptus EO and Rosemary EO .... Along with the coconut oil, castor oil, grapeseed oil , water, lye and sea salt.....So, I don't really see anything that should affect the coloring of it .....So, if anyone can tell me what I should use for coloring please do so .

Is this the recipe on soap making essentials?
This is the same recipe I followed when I made my first salt bar.
You don't really need to add any grated soap to it, just make up your soap base, add your salt, then pour, the grated soap just adds flecks of colour and an interesting texture to the soap.
With my salt bars, I use 95% Co, 5% Castor, superfat at 5% and I add 80% of my oil weight in salt. You need that high a percent of coconut because the salt cuts the lather.If you can, put them in individual moulds, because it gets really hard really quick, and cutting it is a bit of a bugger because it can crumble at first.
Salt bars are lovely though, just wait till you try them, you'll love them.

Yes, this is that recipe.....Now did you add all the extracts, EO's, and the orris powder and titanium dioxide into yours??.... the recipe says it's optional but I was thinking it would be a great smell adding all the EO's and extracts and from what I've read about titanium dioxide and orris root they sound like they add to the bar.
I'm going to run your %'s threw a lye calculator so I can get the full amounts.....I'm still really new at this stuff so when someone brings up %'s I feel stupid for not knowing what that is in oz.

I have another dump question..... Ok, this recipe calls for sea salt -fine course..... Can I use dead sea salt - fine in place of that???

tho i have not personally tried dead sea salts, i've come accross several threads that said dead sea salt doesnt perform as well.

using our search, you may want to look in this forum for previous posts. it's a little time consuming, but you'd be supprised all the bits of info you'll pick up on past posts.

You can get sea salt at the grocery store, usually next to the regular table salt. I have read on the forum that some use kosher salt in their soap. I use the sea salt from the store. As far as the amount of salt some use high percentage of salt to oil but I make mine at 50% of the oils. It lathers like crazy.

lavender.dreams.candles, that 300-400 grms of shaved soap is going to take up volume, so if you are not going to use it, you might want to adjust your recipe in order to fill your mold. Good luck and be sure to post pics!
