ok, I ran across this blender soap recipe and went to my trusty ole lye calc. and made it my mold size .... But, I'm confused... Here is the original recipe and the made for my mold recipe..... My confusion is over the amount of waters .....

Rain Water Bar
~~~~~~~~~~
8 oz Crisco
8 oz Olive oil
2.2 oz. Lye
7 oz. cold rain water
1 teaspoon rain orchid fo
Now made to my mold.....
25.71 oz. Crisco
25.71 oz. Olive Oil
6.69 oz. Lye
15.60 oz. Water
22.50 oz. Rain Water
3.21 oz. rain orchid fo
can someone help me with why so much water???
Something is not right. It looks like you should triple the water (a bit more) but this is more than double that amount!
Your water is spot on.
If you compare in your original recipe, for example, the amount of water with the amount of crisco, you will have
7oz./8oz.=0.875.
That's the ratio of water to crisco
If you now multiply your new amount of crisco x 0.875, you will have
25.71oz. x 0.875=22.49625 oz. or 22.5 oz, to round it up.
so, what should I put the water at???
Also, where is a good place to buy rain orchid fo..... bittercreek has orchid fo and rain fo , but not rain orchid fo....lol
This is your original recipe with a 5% discount for fat and I think it was 44% for water. (as a percent of oils)
Water 7.04
Lye - NaOH 2.07
# √ Oil/Fat Ounces
1 Crisco 8
2 Olive 8
Totals 16
This is with a 5% discount. It looks like your lye is high too!
EDIT: sorry, i didn't see the extra 15.6 oz. of water. I don't know what that comes from, but that's not in the original recipe. You definitely shouldn't use it.
Water 22.625
Lye - NaOH 6.653
# √ Oil/Fat Ounces
1 Crisco 25.71
2 Olive 25.71
Totals 51.42
It looks like you need to get rid of one of the waters and lower the lye a bit. This is done with the soap Calc calculator.
You don't need both waters in your altered recipe. There is something wrong with your second recipe. It doesn't compute correctly. There is too much water.
You can use rain water or distilled water or both combined.
couldn't I just use rain water at the 25 oz. and not have it mixed with distilled water???
For what I calculated, you should use only the 22.5 oz. of water, and 7.07 oz. of lye.
Anyways, I want to make clear I'm NOT a soap expert. Not even close.
But, as I see it, this is a math problem. And I am very good at that.
ok, I re-calculated it with just one water...this is what I got...
25.71 oz. Crisco
25.71 oz. Olive Oil
6.64 oz. Lye
15.49 oz. Water
Does that sound better???
I calculated your original recipe with the same amount (%) of water and I get
Crisco 25.71 oz
Olive 25.71 oz
Water 22.625 oz
Lye - NaOH 6.653 oz
I don't understand where you are getting the lower amount of water unless you are further reducing the water. I haven't reduced the water in my soaps so I have no clue what is allowed.
Her original recipe had less water in it. Yes I got the same thing but I thought she was doing a reduction in water so I tried to apply her original recipe.
MMS has a Rain Orchid FO, as does FNWL.
This site is really handy when you know the name of a FO but not where to get it at, or when you're looking for a dupe of a certain scent.
