Will anyone share their recipe with me?! I'm a little obsessed to get this right, since my last batch was a disaster! I don't have palm oil and can't locate it anywhere w/o ordering online, so it has to be a recipe that doesn't call for palm, or I'll need to know what I can substitute for PO; I think I've read lard can be subbed? If I cut the recipe in half, will that change the amount of lye or liquid that I need to use? Thank you!

Go to soapcalc.net and plug in your original recipe. Then do the same but subbing lard for PO and compare the two. They should be pretty similar with respect to qualities of the finished soap. But if you make ANY changes at all to your recipe, you must recalculate to make sure you have the correct amount of lye. In fact, any recipe you find anywhere, should always be run through a lye calculator. Typos can happen in books. And there is all sorts of soaping misinformation floating about the internet.

Edited to add that most of my own soap recipes don't use palm. A good place to get reliable recipes for beginning soapers is www.millersoap.com However, you will probably want to size them down as her average recipe size is somewhere around 6 lbs.

I still use her Castile II (which does have palm) from time to time. Three oils only and it's a very nice soap.

absolutely. you will have lye heavy soap each and every time if you use the full amount of lye but half the rest of the recipe.

I halved the lye and water also, not just the oils. I just didn't know if cutting everything in half was right or lye and water would still need to be adjusted differently?
