I know that a LOT of people have used these for molds, and I actually tried it ONE time way back in my beginning days of soaping, and had a bad experience. Apparently the FO was a superheater, and the downspoout pipe heated up and the plastic bowed out in the middle. I never did get that soap out of the pipe. I had to chuck the whole thing.

I saw a really beautiful website somewhere along the line (can't remember the name) and all the soaps were made using this rainpipe. I remember oooohing and aaaaahing over them. But I was thinking it would be impossible to line the darn thing because of all the ridges and how the heck would you get the soap out. It seemed too complicated to me, so I chickened out of trying it.

I've used it - here's one of my favorites, I love this shape! (I actually have a lavender/chamomile shampoo bar curing in it right now! hehe)

I've used the same kind as well. Just as long as I don't gel, they don't warp or distend. I usually put them in the fridge or the freezer.

Thank you! I love that shape, I should use it more often LOL but I love my slab mold with dividers (it's so dang easy!) that I end up only using the downspout mold for smaller batches (1.5lb usually).

Oh and I don't line mine, it would take away the detail - I coat it lightly with mineral oil using one of those brushes made for cleaning baby bottles! (brush/sponge on a long handle)

And mine do sometimes gel, but it hasn't warped my downspout (yet).. so far so good! (that white one did gel)

I think they are 5 1/2 inches wide. I am wondering if you could remove the center pieces. I have some of these and the plastic is very thick and durable.

Well Jamn as my mom used to say" the only way you are going to know is to give it a try" :D that is what makes soap making such a blast , who knows what you can come up with .

ok... Now I heard of pvc pipe mold....but, I had my son clean my rain gutter today and was looking at the pipe running down to the ground to the rain spout... Has anyone
used anything like that for a mold??...If so, how long would you need to have it to make a 2 lb. mold and a 3lb mold ??

Funny how we can have some of the same creative thoughts. I was in Home Depot and saw some plastic rain gutters, with grooved sides. I bought it and soaped it, last year. Worked fine.

I didn't find anything good at Lowes, but I found square pvc pipe here: http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/produc ... 5Fid=10995

I'm going to cut it into a couple of approx. 1 ft. lengths. I bought one 10 ft. piece of the 2" square pipe. I was going to do the 3", but as I handled something roughly 3x3 the other day, I changed my mind. It's too big, especially for someone with tiny baby hands like me. Now I'm just trying to figure out how I would cut the pieces. I'm hoping I like them because it's costing about $50 or so.

I love rainpipe moulds - havevnot met any rectangular ones though!
I use several sizes and have made an oval one, just in the oven 'cause I dont own a heating gun ;)

I have used the pvc downspouts pipes with fantastic results . I saran the bottom twice and tape and set it in a coffee can and put newspaper around it to keep it upright . It makes the perfect sized bar and swirling is so easy in them. Never had an overheating or warping issue.

Great idea!! I was wondering how to keep my skinnier PVC upright!! I'm so glad I was browsing this morning! ;)

there are some sweet shaped downspouts, and i wish i could find the soap i'm thinking of. it's almost as if it were a round, with 4 corners. made beautifully shaped soaps, and i soooo want that downspout

i put my 3" pvc in a 5-gallon bucket, using towels to keep standing straight. if your tube is long enough, though, and you don't mind a little scrap you can shape into balls or something, you could even just lean it inside the bucket. it's deep enough that it will keep it fairly upright, and not tip over

I dunno how I missed this thread back when it was young, but I need to look around for some other shapes, the ovals look cool! :D

The only shape of pvc downspouting I can get locally is the fluted rectangle with knocked-off corners, makes this shape of soap:
