I wouldn't compare commercial soap with handmade soap, the process used is incredibly different. If you're interested, I recommend reading this book which the ebook version is free (if you don't have a kindle you can download the free computer kindle software) http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004UJKZSY/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20

I wonder how they can determine that all those chemicals that wind up in the soap will not adversely affect the skin over time. The ingredients list of some of these commercial soaps are quite long.

I'm sorry but IMO the big commercial companies do not care. They are in business to make money, period. They make a detergent bar and spend a fortune on marketing, that doesn't make it safer or better than handmade, and as most people that have tried handmade soap have learned, commercial is rarely as good!
