Hi All,

I have not made any lotion bars yet, but like to get started soon. I looked at some recipes online and none called for any preservative. I'm just curious about the shelf life of a lotion bar w/out some form of preservative. Shouldn't something be added to prolong its shelf life?

Also, instead of pouring it into a mold and popping it out once done. Could I just pour it straight into a tin can which is the kind container that I'd like to use for it. Please let me know. Thank you in advance for all your help.

Hi Melonie,
Solid lotions are anhydrous (water free), that is why they don't need a preservative.
The self life of lotion bars depends on the shelf life and freshness of the oils and butters you use.
For example a lotion bar containing hemp or grapeseed oil is likely to go rancid before a lotion bar containg fractionated coconut or olive oil.

Lotion bars last quite long, but you should test each product over time anyway.

I wouldn't pour straight into those tins; how would you be able to get them out again? You'd end up with a product that's more similar to a balm instead of a lotion bar...

Yes, the deodorant tubes work very well. Instead of having a lotion bar, now you have a lotion stick! Good luck.

I use the cute plastic ones from michaels, they come right out and they have some nice shapes.
i havent had any lotion bars go bad, and I have some old ones. I use, beeswax, shea and almond oil and a little vit e.
