I was at Busch Gardens a week ago, and I went into one of the gift shops to escape the heat. When I was in there, I noticed a table with handmade soaps. I’m always interested in other’s work. It’s fun seeing what other people make. What caught me off guard was that they took part of their label to discuss how their soap was preservative free. I was at a loss as to why they would take the time to do that. I don’t think I know anyone who puts a preservative in their soap. Is it just a labeling gimmick to attract people? Do any of you add preservatives, and am I the odd duck? 😅

Maybe they do that just in case the soap gets DOS in a couple months.
Since DOS is a form of rancidity, you would use a chelator or anti-oxidant to prevent DOS - not a preservative.

Preservatives are for mold and bacteria. Those don’t tend to proliferate on bar soap due to the high pH. Liquid soap has much more water, so a preservative makes more sense for LS, not for bar soap.
