Here's my thought, which is probably irrelevant here since I do Hot Process when I make pine tar soap, and you are probably doing CP. The recipe on the Nerdy Farm Wife is 75% liquid oil. My bars seem to stay a little on the soft and sticky side for several months if I go over 55% liquid oils including the pine tar. I also use quite a bit more pine tar -- up to 30%. That is likely the reason for my soft, sticky pine tar soap!
My son's skin gets dry and itchy during the winter, and that high pine tar soap does wonders for him after one shower. Lotions don't help much, but the strong pine tar soap sure does. I tried it firsts at 20% and then 25%, but 30% is what works for him.
I really like making this soap using hot process. It does trace faster than most soaps, but since it is in the crock pot and going to cook, it's not a problem. I generally use a little sodium lactate after the cook, and some yogurt if it is too stiff to plop into the mold nicely. I like the rustic "old fashioned" look.
Since I use so much pine tar, the scent (which I think is heavenly!) is quite strong, so I don't bother with adding a fragrance or essential oil. I think it would be a waste in this, but folks who use less pine tar often scent it nicely.
