I wanted to do a pine tar soap for my husband. He has very bad itchy scalp and dandruff that even prescription shampoo didn't help. I hope the pine tar helps.

I modified my base to be less cleansing and more conditioning, added 20% pine tar, goats milk and tea tree essential oil CPHP method.

I was documenting each step with pictures and my camera died. geez

Anyway - it went pretty well and now in the mold cooling off. will post pictures when it is cut and my camera charges.

I'm most anxious to see how it turns out. Pine Tar soap is on my to-do list. Please post pics!

It's on my to-do list also. I have a quart of the stuff sitting right here!!
Hope it turns out okay - did you have any trouble with the soap turning out too thick??

One of the reasons I decided to HP it was because I've read it traces real fast. I used full GM and heated the Pine Tar with the oils and EO. I just stirred until it was well incorporated and let it cook. It took about 40 minutes to get to the Vaseline stage and I poured into the mold (after it didn't zap at all). It was a thick pourable consistency too. I didn't have to glop in the mold.

It was actually pretty easy and behaved like any other HP batch I've done.

It is still soft at the bottom but after a couple weeks cure it should be fine. Lathers nice and no zap. The smell with the tea tree EO is quite nice.

Ditto I'd love to know how it works for your hubby. My daughter and I both have similar scalp problems that so far haven't gotten better with other treatments. If it works I'll have to see about buying some. We have some selling at a local health food store.

It looks amazing :)

Please do let us know how it works out for your husband - I have scalp psoriasis and have been getting a bit more experience soaping before taking on pine tar  I'd love to know if he sees any change :)

My husband started using the soap. It is hp and didn't zap so I figured it was ok to give him the go ahead - his scalp was really itchy and flaky. I realize it will be even better after 4 to 6 weeks and last longer.

It has been two days and his scalp has not itched at all. Still has flakes but I figure that will take a while to go away. He is very happy that the itching has stopped. He is not crazy about the smell but he will deal with it :)

I'm sold

I have to make some now - even 2 days without ichiness would be a relief! Must go buy some pine tar now...

Thanks for the update - let us know how he's getting on after a while longer :)

My pine tar soap has completely cleared up the little bit of eczema I have, as well as my cousin's really bad psoriasis...the stuff is amazing! It's a pain to make but so worth it.

That's great to hear Amy - so glad you've found something that works for your skin :) I'm still searching, but ordered my pine tar yesterday, so you never know...I've tried so many things, but I'll keep hoping

Where are you guys finding the pine tar? I went by my local Ace Hardware. Do I need to go to a sporting goods store? I know it's also used on baseball bats for gripping purposes.

Ranch or Farm supply store. Make sure it's 100% pine tar, not the salve for horse hooves (which contains other toxic ingredients). The top of the can says "inert ingredients not to exceed 2% moisture". I made a post about making pine tar soap here, it doesn't have a recipe but helps you make your recipe into a pine tar soap.

thanks for sharing this. How about the labeling since it's something therapeutical???

If you're selling it, you cannot claim anything about it past what you are allowed to for regular soap. If you try and the feds find out, you'll get in heap big trouble. The testing requirements to have a soap labeled a drug is usually too costly for small business soap makers.

I added 20% pine tar (deducted from the OO) to my normal recipe and ran that through soapcalc and did it HP. I bought my Pine Tar at our local Tractor Supply ($10 for 16oz)

I am not planning on selling because for one I am too new to sell and for two even if you don't claim anything about the soap qualities Pine Tar has it's normally known for qualities that makes it a drug under the feds definitions. So even if you advertise and sell it as just a soap by listing pine tar the normal person will understand that as an ingredient that will treat skin problems.

A close friend of mine has psoriasis on her scalp. If I make it for her, does she wash her hair with it, or try to rub it only on her psoriasis patches?
